Symbolic Scores is the first monograph on Renaissance music devoted to discussing more than 150 compositions which involve symbolism inspired by ideas and themes inherent in the musical culture of the time. The introduction describes the historical and theoretical premises of the use of the terms 'allegory', 'sign', and 'symbol', and goes into the aspect of number symbolism as well as the aims, limits, and principles of musico-symbolical analysis. Other studies concentrate on Dufay and Josquin, deal with the symbolical application of soggetto ostinato and canon technique, or treat such themes as music for the dead and the Holy Virgin. The final study is about the conception of heavenly music and musical composition. Symbolic Scores is finely illustrated and includes musical examples, and indices of compositions and names.

Mathematical anxiety is a feeling of tension, apprehension or fear which arises when a person is faced with mathematical content. The negative consequences of mathematical anxiety are well-documented. Students with high levels of mathematical anxiety might underperform in important test situations, they tend to hold negative attitudes towards mathematics, and they are likely to opt out of elective mathematics courses, which also affects their career opportunities. Although at the university level many students do not continue to study mathematics, social science students are confronted with the fact that their disciplines involve learning about statistics - another potential source of anxiety for students who are uncomfortable with dealing with numerical content. Research on mathematical anxiety is a truly interdisciplinary field with contributions from educational, developmental, cognitive, social and neuroscience researchers. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Medical Data Analysis, ISMDA 2003, held in Berlin, Germany in October 2003. The 15 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The two-volume set LNCS 7044 and 7045 constitutes the refereed proceedings of three confederated international conferences: Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS 2011), Distributed Objects and Applications - Secure Virtual Infrastructures (DOA-SVI 2011), and Ontologies, DataBases and Applications of SEmantics (ODBASE 2011) held as part of OTM 2011 in October 2011 in Hersonissos on the island of Crete, Greece. Christian Sacred Music in the Americas explores the richness of Christian musical traditions and reflects the distinctive critical perspectives of the Society for Christian Scholarship in Music. This volume, edited by Andrew Shenton and Joanna Smolko, is a follow-up to SCSM’s Exploring Christian Song and offers a cross-section of the most current and outstanding scholarship from an international array of writers. The essays survey a broad geographical area and demonstrate the enormous diversity of music-making and scholarship within that area. Contributors utilize interdisciplinary methodologies including media studies, cultural studies, theological studies, and different analytical and ethnographical approaches to music. While there are some studies that focus on a single country, musical figure, or region, this is the first collection to represent the vast range of sacred music in the Americas and the different approaches to studying them in context.
