The Handbook of Islamic Sects and Movements offers a multinational study of Islam, its variants, influences, and neighbouring movements, from a multidisciplinary range of scholars. These chapters highlight the diversity of Islam, especially in its contemporary manifestations, as a religion of many communities, theologies, and ideologies. Over five sections—on Sunni, Shia, Sufi, fundamentalist, and fringe Islamic movements—the authors provide historical overviews, analyses, and in-depth studies of large and small Islamic and related groups from all around the world. The contents of this volume will be of interest to both newcomers to the study of Islam and established scholars of religion who wish to engage with the dynamic label of Islam and the many impactful movements of the Islamic world.
This book is the first work that comprehensively presents the accounts of Lia Eden, a former flower arranger who claims to have received divine messages from the Archangel Gabriel and founded the divine Eden Kingdom in her house in Jakarta. This book places Lia Eden’s prophetic trajectory in the context of diverse Indonesian spiritual and religious traditions, by which hundreds of others also claimed to have been commanded by God to lead people and to establish religious groups. This book offers a fresh approach towards the rich Indonesian religious and spiritual traditions with particular attention to the accounts of the emergence of indigenous prophets who founded some popular religions. It presents the history of prophetic tradition which remains alive in Indonesian society from the colonial to reform period. It also explores the ways in which these prophets rebelled against two hegemonies: colonial power in the past and Islamic orthodoxy in the present. The discussion of this book focuses on Lia Eden including her biography, claims to prophethood and divinity, the development of her group Eden Kingdom, her challenge to Islamic orthodoxy under the banner of the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Council), her persecution by radical groups, her experiences in court trials and imprisonment, and public responses to her emergence. The discussion also covers other themes currently drawing public attention in Indonesia, such as pluralism, religious freedom, tolerance, discrimination against minorities, and secularisation.
The Handbook of Palmistry carries the art of reading the hand to a new dimension. Every person's hand is a map containing an incredible amount of information concerning their life and character, their fate in the past, the present and the future, and all this fascinating information can be interpreted with ease once you know how. This book contains everything you could want to know about traditional palmistry with its focus on fortune telling, predicting matters of fate and fortune, love, health, finance and success. It also deals with every subtle aspect of human psychology as recorded on the hand, intellectual, emotional, intuitional and physical. Much of the information has never been published before. And most importantly, it delves more deeply into matters of the inner self, the human soul, the undercurrent of life, than any other book on the subject.
What are we living for? What is the purpose of Life? These questions arose in the mind of a 14-year-old schoolboy at a boarding school in wartime Britain. In pursuit of answers he entered a stairway that lead him to the Quakers, then to the Vedanta philosophy, then on to P.D. Ouspensky and the teachings of G.I.Gurdjieff. By chance he found John Godolphin Bennett, one of the leading exponents of Gurdjieff's 'system', as it was known, and studied for 7 years at the Institute for the Comparative Study of History, Philosophy and the Sciences. Finally in 1957 Subud arrived in England with the arrival of Pak Subuh and his entourage. This book contains a dramatic account of the author's first resistance to this movement, and then an about turn with accounts of changes of consciousness. Knowledge is one thing and belongs to the world of Science. But Consciousness is something other. And Will belongs in yet another dimension. Can man ever become free from the power of the Satanic forces?
