Excerpt from Surgical Observations on Tumours: With Cases and Operations One of the most useful Works in surgery, Which I can imagine, would be a collection of repre sentations of all known tumours. The inade quacy of language to convey to the mind the appearance of these diseases, renders an appeal to'the senses desirable, Whenever it can be em ployed; and When the objects thefiiselves cannot be presented, the best substitute for them is to be found in casts and engravings. Mr. John Bell and Sir Astley Cooper have done much to supply this desideratum, and I should have felt proud to have efi'ected something that might be considered an addition to their labours. To accomplish this Would have required more time and better oppor tunities than it has been my privilege to enjoy. But as I could not abandon the attempt to be useful to those Who have not access to more perfect works, I have procured such represen tations of tumours as could conveniently be ob tained. Excerpt from Surgical Observations on Tumours: With Cases and Operations Having been in the habit of examining and preserving the tumours presented by surgical operations, and having thus made a considerable collection of these objects, I was naturally led to add some lectures, on this branch of surgical science, to my usual course. After doing this, it occurred to me that it might be useful to my profession in this country to commit these lectures to writing, for public use. My plan was to have given place in them to the facts I had collected, and to these only; on the ground that the generalities, which naturally made a part of a surgical course, would be found more thoroughly elaborated and better displayed in works already published. Excerpt from Surgical Observations: With Cases and Operations This volume contains some results of surgical experience, and develops and illustrates what was advanced by the author in an address delivered before the Massachusetts Medical Society, and entitled Recent Progress in Surgery. The cases which are cited have been mostly derived from practice in the Massachusetts General Hospital; and some of them have been previously published. Many others might have been given; but it has been thought proper to relate only those of which the histories have been well ascertained. As a convenient method of classification, the regions of the body have been used; and this order has been kept through the book, except in the last chapters, which relate to Gunshot Wounds, Tumors, and Miscellaneous Cases. It is not pro posed in, this volume to comprehend every surgical subject, or to enter into much descriptive detail; but simply to indicate the chief points in the cases and operations which are recorded.
