In Sugarcane, early shoot borer (ESB), Chilo infuscatellus Snellen (Crambidae; Lepidoptera) is a serious insect pest in peninsular regions of India and more vital in early stages of crop growth causing economic loss. The use of resistant varieties occupies a prime place for effective management of ESB as the chemical control methods have their own limitations in view of the height and lodging nature of the cane crop and these can be used as an adjunct to other suppression methods. Most of the studies were restricted to casual screening of germplasm on limited scale without considering the bases and mechanisms of resistance in promising sugarcane genotypes. Despite large scale screening of the germplasm, it has been felt that there is a scope for substantially improving host plant resistance in sugarcane to ESB through a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of resistance by which the ESB is either attracted or repelled from sugarcane.I hope the book on mechanisms of resistance to ESB in sugarcane and analysis of biochemical and biophysical basis would be useful to the sugarcane research workers and stimulate further researches to develop resistant varieties for borers.
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of biological control of sugarcane stem borer (Chilo infuscatellus Snellen) with an egg parasite Trichogramma chilonis in sugarcane crop. Experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with five treatments i.e. (T1; 30,000eggs/acre, T2; 40,000eggs/acre, T3; 50,000, T4; 60,000 eggs per acre and T5; Control) having three replications each. Experiment was conducted at Chack No.109 G.B. near Jaranwala, District Faisalabad, Punjab. Data regarding mean infestation was recorded at the same time from the control plot and from the biologically treated plots at fortnightly intervals starting from July 15, 2005 to October 15, 2005. The results revealed that the infestation of sugarcane stem borer was reduced up to 84% when Trichogramma chilonis eggs were applied at the rate of 60,000 eggs per acre. So it is concluded that Trichogramma chilonis (Egg parasitized) can successfully be used for the suppression of sugarcane stem borer.
This book comprehensively compiles information on some of the major pests that afflict agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops in particular as well as many polyphagous pests. Not only does this book deal with the pests of common globally produced crops it also addresses those of rarely dealt with crops such as seed spices, medicinal and aromatic plants. While the perspective of insect pests is largely Indian and South East Asian in context, the book does deal with globally problematic pests, particularly polyphagous ones. Not only will the readers be acquainted with the pests, their damaging potential and their life cycle but also with the latest methods of managements including ecofriendly measures being employed to keep pest populations at manageable levels. The 27 chapters in the book, are grouped into four sections primarily based on crop types, viz. pest of agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops, and polyphagous pests, making the book easy to navigate. Each of the chapters is comprehensive and well illustrated and written by academicians who have dedicated their entire lives to the study of a particular crop-pest complex. The final chapter of this book provides an overview on the principles and processes of pest management.
