Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis 14: Vibrations at Surfaces documents the proceedings of the third International Conference on ""Vibrations at Surfaces"" held at Asilomar, California, from September 1-4, 1982. Almost all of the 102 papers presented at the meeting are published in this volume. The topics chosen for the eight sessions held over a span of three days were: (I) Vibrational Frequency Shifts and Widths-Lateral Interactions; (II) Dynamical Processes at Surfaces; (III) and (IV) Electron Loss Spectroscopy; (V) Raman and Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering; (VI) Infrared Absorption and Reflection Spectroscopy; (VII) Beam Surface Scattering Surface Phonons; (VIII) Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy - Surface Enhanced Raman Studies in Electrochemistry. In addition, C. B. Duke presented an introductory keynote surveying progress in the field since the last meeting. In the final session H. Ibach and T. Grimley presented conference overviews and future prospects for the field from an experimental and theoretical perspective. Also included in the Proceedings are four literature surveys on Energy Loss, Inelastic Tunneling, Infrared and Raman (SERS) papers.
This volume contains almost all of the 79 papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Vibrations at Surfaces. The proceedings reflect the significant advances that have been made in the field of surface vibrations since the previous conference on the topic held in 1982. The presented papers showed a tendency of development in new directions, particularly in relation to dynamical effects occurring in atom and molecule-surface interactions. The Symposium was held to honour the memory of the late Dr. A.J. Tench who made numerous important contributions to our knowledge of the structure, reactivity and adsorption properties of oxide surfaces. Because of the great importance of acid catalysis in the petrochemical industry, extensive research has been carried out during the last 30 years concerning the fundamental and applied aspects of catalysis by acids. In contrast, base-catalyzed reactions have received little attention in heterogeneous catalysis. Global environmental problems, especially global warming caused by the accelerative accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, are of great importance for humans. The world's population is now approaching 6 billion, and is still increasing. Developments in communication systems and transportation tools have made the circulation of information, technologies and materials easier, which results in rapid economic growth, particularly in the East and Southeastern Asian countries. Increased affluence leads to an increased consumption of fossil fuels. Inevitably, this leads to an increase in carbon dioxide emission and environmentally hazardous materials which in turn precipitates climatic changes on a global scale. Recent studies showed that the increase in carbon dioxide emission for last year was the highest in the past seven years, and the total amount of carbon dioxide emission from all over the world reached 6.5 billion tons. Furthermore, one cannot overlook the report which appeared recently in Nature, that the floor-area of the iceberg in the South Pole has already decreased by 25% in the past five decades.Over 260 scientists and engineers from 21 countries who had a strong interest and wished to contribute to solve the carbon dioxide problem attended this conference. The papers presented in this volume cover most of the possibilities of the chemical conversion of carbon dioxide.

Providing a concise treatment of methods of heterogeneous catalysis used in the laboratory, this book describes the basic phenomena of heterogeneous catalytic reaction systems and discusses in detail the experimental methods and procedures for investigating these systems. The introductory chapter illustrates the whole procedure with an actual example. The next chapter presents the basic phenomena of catalytic systems and the concepts used in studying them. The third chapter covers the description of methods for investigating reaction mechanisms and the dynamics of heterogeneous catalytic reaction systems. The last chapter discusses the design and operation modes of laboratory reactors, frequently used for the investigation of heterogeneous catalytic reactions.The approach is interdisciplinary, providing a balance between chemical engineering and chemical viewpoints of treating laboratory-scale reactors. Catalyst production for the transformation of crudes into gasoline and other fuel products is a billion dollar/year business and fluid cracking catalysts (FCCs) represent almost half of the refinery catalyst market. During the cracking reactions, the FCC surface is contaminated by metals (Ni, V, Fe, Cu, Na) and by coke deposition. As a result, the catalyst activity and product selectivity is reduced to unacceptable levels thus forcing refiners to replace part of the recirculating equilibrium FCC inventory with fresh FCC to compensate for losses in catalyst performance. About 1,100 tons/day of FCC are used worldwide in over 200 fluid cracking catalyst units (FCCUs). It is for these reasons that refiners' interest in FCC research has remained high through the years almost independantly, of crude oil prices. However, recent oil company mergers and the dissolution of research laboratories, have drastically decreased the number of researchers involved in petroleum refining research projects; as a result the emphasis of research has shifted from new materials to process improvements and this trend is clearly reflected in the type of papers contained in this volume. Modern spectroscopic techniques continue to be essential in the understanding of catalyst performance and several chapters in the book describe the use of 27Al, 29Si and 13C NMR to study variation in FCC acidity during aging and coke deposition. In addition several chapters have been dedicated to the modeling of FCC deactivation, and to the understanding of contact times on FCC performance. Refiners efforts to conform with environmental regulations are reflected in chapters dealing with sulfur removal, metals contaminants and olefin generation.
