Stormy Winds was birthed by the Holy Spirit out of a challenging and difficult time, not only in my life but also in the nations of the world. Many, including myself, are yet to recover from these challenges. However, God, through His word as written in this book, has reassured us that despite it all, despite the long nights and dark seasons, and despite the personal changes and challenges, we, His people, need not fear—His word and promises will be fulfilled in our lives. Beyond stormy winds lies purpose. Nothing is more important than to learn how to maintain a life of purpose in the midst of painful adversity. Every sentence of this book is pregnant with wisdom, and I enjoyed the mind-expanding experience of this exciting book. I admonish you to plunge into this ocean of knowledge and watch your storms turn into blessings by God. (Bishop Victoria Beecham)
Fourteen-year-old Ann Collins wants nothing more than to see her family rise back from poverty and regain its acclaimed position in the racing world. And when Lightning, a well-bred black colt, is born, she knows that her chance has come. Her grandfather bankrupted the formerly successful, fully staffed horse farm in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, and now the Collins family, their trainer and his son are all that remain. Ann is a great rider, but it will take more than just skill for her to make her dreams a reality. Even if no one else really believes in Lightning, she knows that he will be the one to change it all. Little does she know that she and Lightning will be put to the test much sooner than expected! Author Nancy Clarke is a retired elementary school teacher who lives in central Virginia with her two horses, a multitude of champion show dogs, cats, chickens and a goat. Nancy has been riding for most of her life and has been crafting the Stormy Hill series in her mind since she was a child.
At long last, the first serious biography of entertainment legend Lena Horne -- the celebrated star of film, stage, and music who became one of the first African-American icons. At the 2001 Academy Awards, Halle Berry thanked Lena Horne for paving the way for her to become the first black recipient of a Best Actress Oscar. Though limited, mostly to guest singing appearances in splashy Hollywood musicals, "the beautiful Lena Horne," as she was often called, became a pioneering star for African Americans in the 1940s and fifties. Now James Gavin, author of Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, draws on a wealth of unmined material and hundreds of interviews -- one of them with Horne herself -- to give us the defining portrait of an American icon. Gavin has gotten closer than any other writer to the celebrity who has lived in reclusion since 1998. Incorporating insights from the likes of Ruby Dee, Tony Bennett, Diahann Carroll, Arthur Laurents, and several of Horne's fellow chorines from Harlem's Cotton Club, Stormy Weather offers a fascinating portrait of a complex, even tragic Horne -- a stunning talent who inspired such giants of showbiz as Barbra Streisand, Eartha Kitt, and Aretha Franklin, but whose frustrations with racism, and with tumultuous, root-less childhood, left wounds too deep to heal. The woman who emerged was as angry as she was luminous. From the Cotton Club's glory days and the back lots of Hollywood's biggest studios to the glitzy but bigoted hotels of Las Vegas's heyday, this behind-the-scenes look at an American icon is as much a story of the limits of the American dream as it is a masterful, ground-breaking biography.
Join Stormy on his inspiring journey as he tries to find what makes him special, meeting friends along the way who teach him to never give up, and always believe in yourself.
More than twenty years ago, Jane Ahlrichs, legally brought Harrison Benson, whom she believed was the son of her deceased fiancée, to the Ahlrichs' homestead known as Stormy Acres in Monticello, Iowa. No one but Jane wanted the baby, but she was determined to raise him at any cost. After Jane's father died, she became involved with Buddy Hicks, who was using her in order to gain control of the farm. At first, she appreciated his help on the farm, but Buddy had an evil plan. He secretly hired a man to kill Harrison, which would enable him to move ahead with his scheme. The plan backfired, and someone else was killed. In May of 1982, a man drove up the lane at Stormy Acres, knocked on the kitchen door, and was reacquainted with Jane. He revealed the truth about Harrison's birth, and opened up a new world for Jane which took her into high-society in New York City, without having to give up Stormy Acres.
