Salmon stocks of Lomond River, Torrent River and Western Arm Brook exceeded conservation requirements in 1998 as in every year since 1992 due to increasing small and large salmon returns and increasing proportion of large salmon. In contrast to the other two rivers, the returns to Torrent River have shown an increasing trend since the 1970s, possibly due to the successful colonisation of a major portion of the watershed with adult salmon and early high survival of juvenile salmon in the freshwater environment. The potential for future growth in these stocks is evidenced by improvements seen in juvenile densities and in smolt production on Western Arm Brook.
Biology of Marine Birds provides the only complete summary of information about marine birds ever published. It analyzes their breeding biology, ecology, taxonomy, evolution, fossil history, physiology, energetics, and conservation. The book covers four orders of marine birds in detail and includes two summary chapters that address the biology of shorebirds and wading birds and their lives in the marine environment. Summary tables give detailed information on various aspects of their life histories, breeding biology, physiology and energetics, and demography. It provides a guide to ornithologists and students for research projects.
This paper assesses the general status of Atlantic salmon stocks in Salmon Fishing Areas 3 to 14A of the Newfoundland region in 2002. Catch & effort data from the recreational fishery, along with counts at fishways & counting fences, are examined in relation to historical data and management measures in effect in 2002. Results are presented & discussed by Fishing Area with regard to smolt-to-adult survival; recreational catches; fish counts at counting facilities, with comparisons to counts in earlier years; and total returns of small & large salmon.
Fifteen separate rivers on the Northumberland Strait shore of Nova Scotia support Atlantic salmon stocks. Stock status information for 1999 is provided for eight of those stocks based on the conservation requirements and escapements calculated either from a mark-and-recapture experiment (River Philip), capture (exploitation) rates in the angling fishery, or a count of fish by snorkel divers (Sutherlands River). Additional information is included for the three principal rivers in the area. East River, Pictou; River Philip and West River, Antigonish.
