The United Nations has designated the 1980's as the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade. Its goal is to provide two of the most fundamental human needs - safe water and sanitary disposal of human wastes - to all people. Since the technology for supplying water is better understood, the emphasis in this volume is on sanitation and waste reclamation technologies, their contributions to better health, and how they are affected by water service levels and the ability an willingness of communities to pay for the systems. This manual presents the latest field results of the research, summarizes selected portions of other publication on sanitation program planning, and describes the engineering details of alternative sanitation technologies and how they can be upgraded. The guidelines, procedures, and technologies are based on the World Bank's own research in nineteen countries. The twenty-two chapters are divided into three parts: socioeconomic aspects of sanitation program planning, sanitation program planning, and sanitation technology options. The manual is extensively illustrated with the technical diagrams of the recommended sanitation systems and their components.
"The purpose of these standards is to present criteria for nation-wide use of developers, builders, and consulting engineers in developing privately owned central water systems that will provide properties insured by the Federal Housing Administration with water in adequate quantity, of acceptable quality and sufficient pressure. The material includes design information applicable to the fulfillment of the stated objectives of the various water system components, as well as the technical exhibits to be submitted to FHA at each appropriate stage of subdivision processing."--Foreword.
This book comprises the edited Proceedings of the 28th WEDC Conference held in Kolkata (Calcutta), India in November 2002. It presents over one hundred and forty papers relating to subjects including sanitation, hygiene promotion, solid waste management, environment, wastewater, water resources and water supply, including management, financial, institutional and community issues, as well as keynote addresses.
Urbanization in Asia is expected to reach 55% by 2030 and 64% by 2050 to constitute 53% of the world's urban population and contribute half the world's gross domestic product. But as cities swell, they also struggle with environmental degradation, traffic congestion, inadequate urban infrastructure, and lack of basic civic services. This manual prepared by Urban Sector Group of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) provides guidelines for conducting rapid urban assessments. It is guided by the Urban Operational Plan 2012-2020 which outlines ADB's support to its members in developing their urban economies through the 3E approach (Economy, Environment, and Equity). It presents a framework providing a context for the city-level 3E tool kits (Tool Kit for Rapid Economic Assessment, Planning, and Development of Cities in Asia; Green City Development Tool Kit; and Enabling Inclusive Cities: Tool Kit for Inclusive Urban Development).
Details the design and process of water supply systems, tracing the progression from source to sink Organized and logical flow, tracing the connections in the water-supply system from the water’s source to its eventual use Emphasized coverage of water supply infrastructure and the design of water treatment processes Inclusion of fundamentals and practical examples so as to connect theory with the realities of design Provision of useful reference for practicing engineers who require a more in-depth coverage, higher level students studying drinking water systems as well as students in preparation for the FE/PE examinations Inclusion of examples and homework questions in both SI and US units
