For our third book on stagecoach history, we have chosen the stage routes connecting Maine's three capitals, Boston, Portland and Augusta. Preceding stagecoach travel in the west by at least forty years, travel in the east started in the late 18th century and was in full swing until the railroads took over in the 1840s. Subjects covered include an overview of why Maine's capital moved from Boston to Portland and finally to Augusta; the building of the stage roads; formation of the stage lines; taverns and inns along the way and personal accounts of travel and experiences on the stage routes. Over 100 black and white images coupled with twenty-two color photos provide a unique glimpse into Maine's past.
Formed in 1984, following the decision by the National Bus Company to divide the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company Ltd into smaller parts, Cambus Holdings became responsible for operating services in Cambridgeshire and West Suffolk. A management buy-out took place in 1986, followed by the formation of Viscount Travel in 1989, followed by acquisition of Premier Travel in 1990. The company expanded into other geographical areas including Milton Keynes and parts of Buckinghamshire, before being taken over by Stagecoach Holdings in 1996. The new owners added Go West Travel to the Cambus operations, trading as Norfolk Green, in recent times the company has ceased operating in the King's Lynn area, this taking place in 2018.
An informative history covering nearly a century of this British bus company, packed with facts and photos. United Counties Buses: A Fleet History begins by taking a brief look at the expansion of the United Counties Omnibus Company since its formation in September 1921 through its demise in October 2014. The company acquired over fifty independent operators between 1922 and 1938, giving it prominence in Northamptonshire and surrounding areas. May 1952 saw the fleet double in size with the acquisition of the Midland area of the Eastern National Omnibus Company, encompassing Bedfordshire, north Buckinghamshire, and north Hertfordshire. The National Bus Company split United Counties into three operating companies in 1986, United Counties, Luton & District and MK Citybus, halving the size of the fleet. After being acquired by the Stagecoach Group in 1987, the company was largely left untouched. The main focus of the book looks at the vehicles operated by the company, covering the numerous types operated by United Counties themselves. The various liveries, both fleet and advertising liveries, are also listed.

One journalist curious about life in the taverns along the stagecoach lines in Wisconsin and northern Illinois from the early 1800s until the 1880s was Harry Ellsworth Cole. While he could not sample strong ales at all of the taverns he wrote about, Cole did study newspaper accounts, wrote hundreds of letters to families of tavern owners, read widely in regional history, and traveled extensively throughout the territory. The result, according to Brunet, is a "nostalgic, sometimes romantic, well-written, and easily digested social history." At Cole's death, historian Louise Phelps Kellogg edited his manuscript, which in this case involved turning his notes and illustrations into a book and publishing it with the Arthur H. Clark Company in 1930.
California was the mining center of the West for half a century. Wherever precious minerals were found, road agents appeared to "mine the roads" of treasure being shipped out and payrolls being shipped in. The first recorded robbery of a stagecoach occurred in 1856, and the last in 1913. Over that period there were 458 stagecoach robberies, many with special characteristics such as a claim the robbers were Confederate soldiers, a murder, a gun battle, or a thrilling pursuit and capture. Surprisingly, there were many robberies in which the perpetrator remained unknown or in which was so little stolen the robber was not even sought out. This book gives all the details of those robberies taken from the contemporary newspapers and from a variety of other sources.
