The five-volume set IFIP AICT 630, 631, 632, 633, and 634 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International IFIP WG 5.7 Conference on Advances in Production Management Systems, APMS 2021, held in Nantes, France, in September 2021.* The 378 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 529 submissions. A number of arguments are made by an international group of authors in this though provoking book about an understudied and socially important context. A future in which financial wealth transfers across the North-South divide from richer to poorer countries is far from sufficient for the relief of poverty and the pursuit of sustainability. Caution must be taken when growth is achieved through the liquidation of the natural wealth of poorer nations, in order to maintain a global economic status quo. Neither poverty reduction nor sustainability will ultimately be achieved. The financial collapse and social upheaval that might result will make the most recent economic downturn look trivial by comparison. What is more urgently needed instead, as argued in this book, is collaboration for sustainability and innovation in the global South, especially building on models originally developed in the South that are transferable to the North. In pursuit of a sustainable and more equitable future, the book examines such topics as Cross-Border Innovation in South-North Fair Trade Supply Chains; Potential Pollution Prevention Programs in Bangladesh; Digital Literacy and Social Inclusion in the South through Collective Storytelling and Eco-innovation at the ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’. Many of these stories and have not been told and need greater visibility. The book contributes in a meaningfully to the discussion of how innovation and sustainability science can benefit both sides in South-North innovation collaborations. It provides useful introduction to the topics, as well as valuable critiques and best practices. This back-and-forth flow of ideas and innovation is itself new and promising in the modern pursuit of a fair and sustainable future for all regions of our planet.
This Special Issue of the Manufacturing Engineering Society 2019 (SIMES-2019) has been launched as a joint issue of the journals Applied Sciences and Materials. The 10 contributions published in this Special Issue of Applied Sciences present cutting-edge advances in the field of manufacturing engineering, focusing on production planning, sustainability, metrology, cultural heritage, and materials processing, with experimental and numerical results. It is worth mentioning that the topic “production planning” has attracted a great number of contributions in this journal, due to their applicative approach.
This monograph, as entitled, defines and describes the research field at the interface of Finance, Operations, and Risk Management (iFORM), provides examples where operations and finance overlap in meaningful ways, outlines promising research directions, and reduces the entry cost for anyone who would like to explore this new and exciting research field. The intended audience for this article includes both PhD students in operations management (OM), finance, and economics, who are looking for dissertation topics, and experienced researchers looking for novel applications of their expertise. The following outlines the rest of this article. Chapter 2 compares perspectives of finance and operations on the same topic: the firm. This motivates the key questions in finance, which is presented in the finance primer in chapter 3 and key questions in OM, which is presented in the OM primer in chapter 4. Having discussed key ideas from these disciplines separately, chapter 5 examines how OM and finance intersect in meaningful ways and suggest several promising research directions. Chapter 6 presents a "dos and don'ts list for publishing and reviewing iFORM papers.
This open access book explores the concept of Industry 4.0, which presents a considerable challenge for the production and service sectors. While digitization initiatives are usually integrated into the central corporate strategy of larger companies, smaller firms often have problems putting Industry 4.0 paradigms into practice. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) possess neither the human nor financial resources to systematically investigate the potential and risks of introducing Industry 4.0. Addressing this obstacle, the international team of authors focuses on the development of smart manufacturing concepts, logistics solutions and managerial models specifically for SMEs. The ICEBE conference in Windhoek is the sixth in a series of annual conferences on engineering and business education. It is organized by the Robert-Schmidt-Institute (University Wismar), hosted by Polytechnic of Namibia and co-organised by University of Applied Sciences Jena. The conferences were held in Sibiu (Romania), Manila (Philippines), Cape Town (South Africa) and Wismar (Germany). The theme of the Windhoek Conference is “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability which describes the emphasis that is laid on always using these three terms in combination, i.e., not to consider one in isolation from the others. Thus the primary target of this conference is to provide the delegates with cross-disciplinary thinking related to the three main streams in engineering and business education.
This open access book explores supply chains strategies to help companies face challenges such as societal emergency, digitalization, climate changes and scarcity of resources.
