Religious, Thirty Sonnets is a book of poems that uses the sonnet form to touch on various religious themes, but you do not have to be a believer to enjoy what this book aims for: to give a reminder that the sonnet is a poetic form that has shown its beauty and permanence from William Shakespeare to Robert Frost, and when exercised well can give times of pleasure and delight. My focus has been on accessible language and good poetic technique rather than on elaborate diction and complicated subject matters. This book entertains while giving meaningful reading.
"If Shakespeare and David had met, Psalms as Sonnets might have been the result. The poetic meter that mimics the human heartbeat, combined with the writings of the man who pursued the very heart of God, will touch your heart again and again and again." —Mark Stuart Two-time Grammy-winning artist "An anointed work that will touch the core of every person’s inner heart. I have never read the Psalms with such delight." —David L. Cook, Ph. D. Author of Seven Days in Utopia "A fantastic work that allows us to meet the Psalms again as though for the first time. A delightful, fresh expression that remains true to the original intent." —Craig A. Smith, Ph.D. Lead Pastor, Mission Hills Church "A breathtakingly beautiful way to breathe in Scripture." —Danny Oertli Singer | Songwriter | Author "An incredible literary achievement. A must-read for the lover of Psalms." —Darrell Scott Co-founder of Rachel’s Challenge "A beautiful expression of the Psalms that captures the essence of history’s most authentic and vulnerably written work of art." —Reza Zadeh Chaplain for the Denver Broncos
Poetry has always been a central element of Christian spirituality and is increasingly used in worship, in pastoral services and guided meditation. Here, Cambridge poet, priest and singer-songwriter Malcolm Guite transforms 70 lectionary readings into inspiring poems for use in regular worship, seasonal services, meditative reading or on retreat.
'This Complete Sonnets and Poems is a distinguished addition to a distinguished series. It will repay continuing study, and act as a valuable point of reference for readers concerned more generally with Shakespeare's art and language. Colin Burrow's good sense, tact and balance as aneditor are deeply impressive.' -H. R. Woudhuysen, Times Literary SupplementThis is the only fully annotated and modernized edition to bring together Shakespeare's Sonnets as well as all his poems (including those attributed to him after his death). A full introduction discusses his development as a poet, and how the poems relate to his plays; detailed notes explain the language and allusions in clear modern English. While accessibly written, the edition takes account of the most recent scholarship and criticism.
As well as the name of a virus, a corona is a crown, the pearly glow around the sun in certain astronomical conditions and a poetic form where interlinking lines connect a sequence. It is the perfect name therefore for this new collection of 150 poems by the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite, each one written in response to the Bible’s 150 psalms as they appear in William Coverdale’s timeless translation. The Psalms express every human emotion with disarming honesty, as anger and thankfulness alike are directed at God. All of life is here with its moments of beauty and its times of despair and shame. Like the Psalms themselves, the poems do not avoid the cursing and glorying over the downfall of your enemies, but wrestle honestly with them as we do when we come to say them.
From the author After publishing my first book in 2012, “A Rainbow Of Emotions” (ROE for short), I decided to continue writing. However, in the course of a few short years, there were a plethora of significant changes in my life that had drastic effects on my way of thinking. The most significant change of them all is that I had gone from being a believer, to a disciple of Christ. Obviously this has had a tremendous impact on my writing. This book reflects this transition as the poems have been written over the first four years of my salvation and its contents are solely based on Christian ideology giving praise to our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ. By publishing this book I not only intend to give my brothers and sisters in Christ something both entertaining and inspirational to read, but I also hope that someone out there that is unsure of where they stand (spiritually) may find hope and strengthen their faith through the message of the gospel which has inspired me and had a tremendously positive impact on my life. Lastly, I must recognize the three brethren that have also contributed to the final product of this book. First I thank my two proofreaders whom have requested to remain anonymously out of the spotlight! I would also like to thank my brother in Christ Dan Pellegrino Jr. from kingdomimpactdesign.com for designing the cover art for this book. Without them being the furnace to this work, this would be a lump of unrefined gold with the dross still inside. I hope you are more blessed by reading this book than I was to write it. Peace and grace to you all! Steve Solomon
