A pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1998 involved going to places which have remained largely unchanged since before Jesus walked upon the earth; and a visit to the Holy Land can but enrich a love of the Gospels by going to where Jesus was conceived, to where He was born, to where He prayed and carried out His ministry as the Messiah. As someone who has personally experienced the healing power of the Risen Christ, it is especially meaningful to have stood where Jesus transformed peoples lives through His miracles and preaching. It is inspiring to recall His Passion and Cross, treading the Via Dolorosa, following Jesus footsteps to where, after His Crucifixion, He was to rise from the dead. Our faith in these mysteries can be strengthened by letting such wonders speak to us as we take in many sacred images, contemplating their Gospel accounts. In these holy places we can as if get nearer to God; the journey through this book is a journey which retraces the footsteps of Jesus in His own land, encouraging us, wherever we are, in our daily walk with Him.
Sara Manasseh brings a significant, but less widely-known, Jewish repertoire and tradition to the attention of both the Jewish community (Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Oriental) and the wider global community. The book showcases thirty-one songs and includes English translations, complete Hebrew texts, transliterations and the music notation for each song. The accompanying downloadable resources include eighteen of the thirty-one songs, sung by Manasseh, accompanied by 'ud and percussion. The remaining thirteen songs are available separately on the album Treasures, performed by Rivers of Babylon, directed by Manasseh - : www.riversofbabylon.com. While in the past a book of songs, with Hebrew text only, was sufficient for bearers of the tradition, the present package represents a song collection for the twenty-first century, with greater resources to support the learning and maintenance of the tradition. Manasseh argues that the strong inter-relationship of Jewish and Arab traditions in this repertoire - linguistically and musically - is significant and provides an intercultural tool to promote communication, tolerance, understanding, harmony and respect. The singing of the Shbahoth (the Baghdadian Jewish term for 'Songs of Praise') has been a significant aspect of Jewish life in Iraq and continues to be valued by those in the Babylonian Jewish diaspora.
This annotated bilingual edition presents to readers for the first time a key Hebrew book of Jewish Enlightenment. Printed in Berlin in 1791, Joel Bril’s Hebrew introductions to Psalms constitute the earliest interpretation of Moses Mendelssohn’s language philosophy, translation theory, and aesthetics. In these introductions, Mendelssohn emerges as a critic of Maimonides who located eternal felicity not in union with the Active Intellect but in the aesthetic experience of the divine through sacred poetry. Bril’s theoretical insights, the broad range of his myriad textual sources, and his linguistic innovations make the Book of the Songs of Israel a touchstone of modern Hebrew literary theory and Jewish thought.
