Lines are omnipresent in our everyday experience and language. They reflect and influence the spatial and temporal structures of our world view. Taking Tim Ingold’s cultural history of the line as a starting-point, this book understands lines as expressions that allow insights into cultural theoretical phenomena and thus go beyond their mere form. The essays will investigate this premise from various disciplines (architecture, art, cartography, film, literature and philosophy).
Essays by Soke Dinkla, Renate Heidt Heller and Cornelia Bruninghausen-Knubel.
This study examines the development of Gothic sculpture throughout Europe. It discusses the most famous monuments, such as the cathedrals of Chartres, Amiens and Reims, Westminster Abbey and the Siena Duomo, and less familiar buildings in France, England, Italy, Germany, Spain and Scandinavia.
Oxbow says: The six essays featured in this study originated as papers given at the 36th International Congress of Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo. The contributors survey the ornate altars produced from the early 8th to 13th century in Europe, with specific examples taken from Italy, Germany and Scandinavia.

The Brummer Collection of Medieval Art in the Duke University Museum of Art is one of the finest to be found in any American university museum. It is remarkable for its breadth and the variety of objects represented, with works varying in scale from monumental stone pieces to small-scale objects in wood, ivory, or metal, and ranging from the seventh to eighth centuries through the sixteenth century. This fine catalog makes available for the first time this rich but little-known collection. Five studies by leading art scholars focus on key works in the collection and contribute to a new understanding of the origins of many of the pieces. Two introductory essays comment on the character of the collection as a whole, its acquisition by Duke University, and its conservation. Finally, the catalog section discusses the more important pieces in the collection and is followed by a checklist of entries and smaller photographs of all other objects. Contributors. Ilene H. Forsyth, Jean M. French, Dorothy F. Glass, Dieter Kimpel, Jill Meredith, Linda S. Roundhill
The intention of this volume is to investigate into the dimensions of the cultural practice of the copying of ancient art. Copies as the primary - the original? - that claims to be the secondary are the motor of a range of processes of cultural exchange in which highly varied content and messages were traded and communicated. As products and media of the transformation of antiquity, copies "bring to life" the circumstances of a seemingly simple reception of antiquity.
