Excerpt from Select Pleas of the Forest The text of this volume consists for the most part Of extracts from the eyre rolls of the tenth year Of the reign of John and Of the latter half of the reign of Henry III. The rest consists of forest inquisitions, upon which some of the eyre rolls printed in this volume were based, some perambulations of the reign Of Edward I. And a few other miscellaneous documents. The mss. Relating to Essex (pp. 69 - 74) are in the British Museum; all the others are in the Public Record Office. The Introduction is confined to a description Of the forest laws of the thirteenth century; and it has been found impossible to deal with every branch Of them, even within this limited period. NO docu ments explaining the rights of common enjoyed by the inhabitants of the forests are printed in this volume, nor is any account given Of them in the Introduction. Common is a large subject, and in the judgment Of the editor it is not convenient to treat common in forests apart from common elsewhere. Excerpt from The Forest It is a glimpse of the human heart, seen like the blue sea off soundings (which has puzzled, and worse, our landsmen critics) with an ugly and awful fact of human nature ever and anon surging up to the surface, like a monster of the deep, and showing its dark form for a moment in the leaping sun-light, then disappearing to seek its native depths. It makes you dizzy the unsteady motion, the sun dancing in the firmament, the masts describing segments of cir cles in the sky, the good ship heeled over, and almost laid on her beam ends, under the press of her cloud-like canvass, and threatening every moment to take in a flood over her bows, and the sight of these sea monsters sporting in the brine? Yet out of these Visions and per ceptions of nature, (our own abysmal nature in a turmoil, ) and the struggle to maintain the balance of the soul, spring Virtues and a purity of conscience of which the world has but a faint idea. Excerpt from Among the Forest People Since I told my stories of the meadow people a year ago, so many children have been asking me questions about them that I thought it might be well to send you a letter with these tales of the forest folk. Excerpt from Forest Fancies "If one wishes to study the life - not the mere structure - of an apple-tree in bloom, he must surrender himself at the start to the bloom and fragrance; for these are not mere external phases of the growth of the tree - they are most delicate and characteristic disclosures of its life." Excerpt from Forest and Shore: Or Legends of the Pine-Tree State IT certainly was not the intention of the author, when writing the stories contained in this volume, to give them to the public in the present shape. Writ ten under the pressure of manifold duties, the most that he anticipated for them was a brief newspaper immortality - a passing notice and oblivion. Much to his surprise, however, many of them have con tinued to float on the current of popular favor; and by the advice, repeatedly received, not only from friends but strangers, he has been induced to make the present collection. Excerpt from The Glade in the Forest: And Other Stories Why the deuce could you not send me a wire if you wanted me, man There's no sense in blaming me because you hadn't common sense. Ah, but I was sure you would come, said the Frenchman, ruefully. And the young lady was so disappointed. You should make sure, not be sure, retorted Maurice, snappishly; and he turned on his heel and walked over to where Sir Gilbert Baynes was standing a little away from the rest. Excerpt from Forest Folk But presently the latter appeared to remark and resent the presence of an on-looker. A couple of them made towards him armed with pistols; towns men they looked like, of the artisan sort, in ragged cloth coats and greasy breeches. Evidently the horse man thought it more prudent not to await their coming, for he turned about and galloped off. But as soon as he was fairly out of pistol-shot he again reined in and looked back. The two men stood watching him, and with threatening wafts of the hand seemed to be bidding him continue his retreat. He did so, and soon a dip in the road hid them completely from his View.
