On the surface, this book describes the journey of 9-year-old Joanne battling the terrible disease leukemia and the agony of her loving family. What makes this book unique and special is the surprising, cheerful, and miraculous voice message: See Daddy! That's the new kite" nine months afterher passing into eternity in 2003. While it comforted and gave me instant relief from all the quilt of failing to keep her with us, this miracle mended my shattered faith with a renewed spirit. In addition, I marveled that God would allow Joanne to leave us such as miraculous message revealing that she has a newform of life and is free from suffering like a kite flying happily in the sky.
When Tai Shan and his father, Baba, fly kites from their roof and look down at the crowded city streets below, they feel free, like the kites. Baba loves telling Tai Shan stories while the kites--one red, and one blue--rise, dip, and soar together. Then, a bad time comes. People wearing red armbands shut down the schools, smash store signs, and search houses. Baba is sent away, and Tai Shan goes to live with Granny Wang. Though father and son are far apart, they have a secret way of staying close. Every day they greet each other by flying their kites???one red, and one blue???until Baba can be free again, like the kites. Inspired by the dark time of the Cultural Revolution in China, this is a soaring tale of hope that will resonate with anyone who has ever had to love from a distance.
Over the past generation, kiteflying has evolved beyond a childhood rite of passage into a mainstream adult activity. The kite's popularity skyrocketed at a time when kite makers adopted modern synthetic materials developed for other industries. A new breed of sport kites appeared and kite artists emerged, dazzling onlookers with three-dimensional aerial sculptures. Inventors perfected new designs and accessories while entrepreneurs created a multimillion-dollar kiting industry. Yet, the kitefliers themselves have remained largely anonymous. Drawing on the World Kite Museum's audio archives, this book brings together firsthand stories from the community of devoted enthusiasts who pull the strings.
Sam's dad says that he is too small to fly their new kite, but when Dad, the postman, a bank robber, and some zoo animals get pulled up into the sky, only Sam can save them.
Every daddy is different--and that makes them even more special! "Some daddies teach you about the world. Others attend tea parties. Some help turn blankets into forts. Others hold you steady while you pedal." This rollicking showcase of daddies celebrates the incredible diversity of modern fathers. The inclusive cast of characters--including a two-dad family, a single dad, and a stay-at-home dad--highlights the bond between daddy and child as they play, learn, comfort, and laugh their way through everyday life. This open-hearted ode to fatherhood will give readers new appreciation for how their own fathers and father-figures shine in their own unique ways. Some Daddies is the perfect gift for a new dad, Father's Day, or any occasion for parents and educators to read with their kids. Carol Gordon Ekster's playful text is illustrated with the quirky, colorful artwork of Javiera Maclean Alvarez, making this picture book a wonderful read-aloud.
Herb graduated from high school, has a class A driver’s license, and is an operating engineer. Herb owns his own business, and he is also an arborist and a high-climber. He is a sergeant (USMC) and has a junior college AA business degree. He holds classes on how to win friends and influence people. Herb’s third wife had left him. She could not see any light at the end of the tunnel for him ever quitting drugs or alcohol. Praying to God, the phone rang at that moment; a call from a friend of Herb’s dad who at forty-three years sobriety never called Herb. Instantly, the mental obsession and the physical compulsion were lifted from Herb. Herb attended three alcoholics’ anonymous meetings daily and also checked into Kaiser Chemical Dependency and Veterans Administration Chemical Dependency. He is now fifteen years clean and sober. Why do bad things happen to good people? God loves us that much. Through spiritual discernment, this book may help others, also Herb’s first book, Soul Journey. With miracles of biblical proportion, Lacey intrigues Herb, an account every woman should read.
"For Robert Carter, life in his coastal Maine hometown is comfortably predictable. But in 1976, on his first day of eighth grade, he meets Nathan Tilly, who changes everything. Nathan is confident, fearless, impetuous--and fascinated by kites and flying. Robert and Nathan's budding friendship is forged in the crucible of two family tragedies, and as the boys struggle to come to terms with loss, they take summer jobs at the local rundown amusement park. It's there that Nathan's boundless capacity for optimism threatens to overwhelm them both, and where they learn some harsh truths about family, desire, and revenge"--Amazon.com.
When I lost my job in 2007 God gave me a vision to write this book. It was not until September 2009 that I sat down and started writing an invitation to all who search for the truth about faith, which I call Invitation from the Author. I do not pretend nor claim to know all about the Bible, but I share my experience with the true God and how He transforms me from the inside out. When God took away my job, He had in mind a much better and more fulfilling opportunity for me. The opportunity was to be able to give back to my parents, to become their full-time caregiver. God knew my heart's desire. I was blessed with wonderful parents and they are at the point in their lives that they need me to care for them. I can never repay their hard work and sacrifices on my behalf, but I can be there for them at this point in their lives. "Who Are You Wearing?" talks about who you are inside. Being separated from God is not where you want to be. I know...I have been there so many times. I love where I am right now. I stay close to Him, and He is with me everywhere I go, to help me resist temptation. To those who are still looking for a job, I pray that you will seek God and trust that He will continue to protect you and provide for your needs. My journey with the Lord has been awesome because I wear the outfit that matters most...the outfit of salvation. When God closes one door (as He did by moving me from my old job to one of caring for my parents) He opens a bigger door! He is in control.
