Excerpt from Scottish Clerical Stories and Reminiscences In this volume there are, all told, upwards of four hundred anecdotes. A considerable number of these have not previously appeared in print; while many of the others have been collected from the published memoirs of the clerics to whom they refer. Most of the stories, although by no means all, are associated with ministers of the former United Presbyterian Church - the communion in which the writer was brought up, and in the service of which he has spent much the larger part of his life. Although a comparatively small denomination, this Church produced, in proportion to its size, a remarkable number of able preachers and devoted pastors. Many of these were men with what is called a "presence." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Scottish Life Character In preparing another duodecimo edition of the "Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character," I gladly avail myself of the opportunity afforded me of reproducing some of the materials which had been added to the octavo edition, especially that part at page 322, etc., which advocated a modified interchange of pulpits between Episcopalian and Presbyterian clergymen; to add also some excellent Scottish stories which had been sent to me by kind friends. I am desirous also of repeating the correction of an error into which we had fallen in copying the account of a toast in the Highland form, which had been kindly contributed by the respected minister of Moulin, in the octavo edition at page 70. To Lowland conceptions, the whole proceeding has somewhat the appearance of a respectable company at once becoming insane; still it ought to be correct, and the printer had, by mistake, inserted a word that has no existence in the Gaelic language. The text reads - "Lud ris! Lud Ris! You again! You again!" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Marquis of Montrose, Vol. 1 A renewed search in the Duke Of Montrose's charter room, for which his Grace afforded every facility, brought to light the depositions before the Committee of Estates of a number of individuals, some of them persons of dis tinction and others ordinary prisoners Of war, whose evidence abounds in minute and curious details. These serve to illustrate Montrose's campaigns, both at the out set of his career in 1644 when he distinguished himself against the rebels. In the north of England, and also throughout the whole series of those surprising Victories by which he more than fulfilled his desperate mission from the King. Other original documents were at the same time recovered, from the charter-room at Buchanan, which evince the vindictive spirit of the clerical government of Scotland, and justify the severest comments that can be passed upon those chiefs of the covenanting clergy, who hardened their hearts against the fact that the Almighty's throne is the throne of mercy. Excerpt from Ancient Catholic Homes of Scotland Soon after publishing the first volume of The Catholic Highlands of Scotland, I was able to spend two months in Rome, where the archives of Propaganda were most courteously placed at my disposal. As the time was limited, I confined myself entirely to Oopying such letters as related to the Highland District. These Oopies lay untouched, until the present war, and my appointment as Catholic chaplain with the Fleet, gave me an un expected opportunity Of putting them in order. They then afforded me great interest and helped to pass the long winter evenings. But the circumstances were not altogether favourable for writing, since there were no books of reference at hand by which to check my own statements or those of the writers of the letters. This must be my apology if any inaccuracies have crept in. Once again I must thank those who most kindly read through and corrected each chapter, as also those who assisted me with the illustrations.
