This book was written in Hinckley and Parma, Ohio between July 2000 and April 2001. The year before John Stover wrote it, a friend of his had a heart attack and two days later, a triple bypass surgery. Seeing someone he cares about go through that experience influenced the author in ways related to the book. It put things in perspective. Along with trying to write a mystery/suspense story, some of the elements Stover tried to deal with are love, loss, true friendship and the issues of prejudice and tolerance.
The Miller family (Henry and Jean, and their children Emma, Michael, and Sophia) arrive home one evening to find their house on fire. After weeks of searching, the family locates a new house, but they soon find out that not everything is what it seems: strange lights appear in Sophias room, voices are heard in Michaels room, a bright orb of light flies around the house at night, and that is just the beginning of the unusual, unexplained phenomena. As Michael and Emma explore deeper into the houses past, they soon find amazing wonders that will affect the entire family, but not everyone shares this view. When Jean discovers what is happening, she begins to worry for her familys safety and feels they need to move out. Henry, Michael, Emma, and Sophia want to stay. As the division grows between the members of the family, the unusual activities in the house come to a halt.

The language of crime has a long and venerable history - in fact, the first collection of words specifically used by criminals, Hye-Way to the Spittel House, dates from as early as 1531. Jonathon Green is our national expert on slang, and in Crooked Talk he looks at five hundred years of crooks and conmen - from the hedge-creepers and counterfeit cranks of the sixteenth century to the blaggers and burners of the twenty-first - as well as the swag, the hideouts, the getaway vehicles and the 'tools of the trade'. Not to mention a substantial detour into the world of prisons that faced those unlucky enough to be caught by the boys in blue. If you have ever wondered when the police were first referred to as pigs, why prison guards became known as redraws, or what precisely the subtle art of dipology involves, then this book has all the answers.
The first three books in the five-book Young Adult novel series is available here in one single package. Follow Jack Erickson as he traverses the world of the paranormal with his family and friends, and learns a thing or two about life along the way. All titles are also available separately. Book 1 - Hawthorn Inn: Jack Erikson doesn’t have great expectations when his mother moves them to an old decrepit inn in a town just as musty, but he’s unprepared for the oddities that start springing out of the rotten woodwork. New friends introduce him to legends and rumors that have swirled around the inn since time-immemorial, and he finds plenty of proof to believe them as strange noises and twisted shadows stalk the halls. Worst of all, his estranged grandfather has invited himself to join them at the inn. Creepy doesn’t begin to describe that black-cloaked gentleman with the pale skin and weird, ever-constant glasses. Old secrets, mysterious sealed-up rooms and creeping shadows abound as Jack tries to manage his new life at Hawthorn Inn. Book 2 - Sanctuary: Adventure and thrills return as Jack Erikson tries to settle down to a calm, relaxing life at Hawthorn Inn. He doesn’t get that time to relax, though, when the inn receives its first guest even before it opens and his mom’s investors arrive just a week before the big Halloween party the inn is hosting. Tensions rise and relationships evolve as Jack is thrown into more mystery and mayhem. Book 3 - Ghost Woods Disembodied screams. Rumors of curses. Hidden wells long forgotten. Those are a few of the mysteries rising from the fog around the Ghost Woods, the stretch of trees surrounding Hawthorn Inn and the small town of Sanctuary. Jack again finds himself the focus of the eerie happenings as he makes new allies and learns more about his strange grandfather. Shadows lengthen and the danger deepens as Jack and his friends try to stay one step ahead of their adversary.
