Excerpt from Rhyme and Reason My friend, I believe, is as nearly secure As anyone now is; at least I am sure That if merit can strengthen his tenure, he'll stay Till he wants to resign, or death takes him away. You'd like him, I'm sure, if you know him as I do, For he's one of the very few men you can tie to. Rare character? Yes, you're felicitous there. He is one of a class so remarkably rare That the newspapers speak of it often as non est, Being thoroughly, conscientiously honest; Not rough, like the commoner plain, blunt kind, But polished in manners, in speech refined; And yet a certain unconscious air Bids any who might presume beware Lest quick resentment should make them feel That under the polish is solid steel. Excerpt from Rhyme or Reason If by chance you should glance through this book, Quite idly when killing some time, Though Reason's there too if you look. The motif is mainly in Rhyme. One day I'll be frightfully clever. Through muse or through natural growth, And achieve by the sternest endeavour A nice combination of both. Excerpt from Rhyme and Reason: Short and Original Poems Question to be decided by the candid Critic alone. The Writer is not without hope that this gentle Readers who are conversant with modern Poetry (as it is termed most courteously) will thank him for his attempt to combine Rhyme and Reason, on the Score of Novelty. The Author declares openly to Critics of all Descriptions, that he is not so courteous to himself as to think that his Poems have the smallest Claim to the Title of Poetry. Rhyme? And Reason? by Lewis Carroll
Excerpt from Rhyme and Reason: A Booklet of Fragments The decree in Eden that established the relation between sweat and bread has shut most of the poetry out of my life, and demanded the time that I would have been glad to devote to the delightful study of literature. But there have been compensations. Among my close, personal friends were Burns, Byron, Moore and Scott, and many words of sweetest counsel and inspiration dropped from their lips into the heart of their humble worshiper. From time to time in the nooks and crannies of an active life I have written several bits of verse, most of which are entirely lost. But a few friends have been kind enough to ask for copies of some of the fragments that escaped the waste-basket - hence this booklet. Without any delusions regarding their literary merit and secure in the certainty that their readers will be limited to the author's friends, whose generosity and forbearance have been so often tried, the risk of publishing the following selections is assumed. Excerpt from Rhymes With Reason and Without The writer trusts that in no instance in his book has he uttered a word or sentiment that need disturb the equanimity, of the most fastidious and though the Rhymes without Reason may predominate, still, as the amusement of the people was their aim, their good-nature may atone for lack of literary merit. One word he can say, however, for his entire book, - as the man said about his baby, It is not a very handsome baby, but it 's mine. The different phases of feeling expressed therein, whether of the mirthful or the sad and there is much of sad ness in it, - are correct transcripts of the writer's own feelings, moved at twee by grief as deep as the human heart can know, and by joys of a corresponding strength.
