Summary of research at the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke.
The Stroke Progress Review Group (Stroke PRG) is modeled after the National Cancer Institute's planning process which was originally established to assist the NCI in assessing the state of knowledge and identifying scientific opportunities and needs within its large, site-specific research programs. The Stroke PRG is charged with assisting the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in addressing the Institute's Stroke research program. PRG members are asked to take a broad view in identifying and prioritizing unmet scientific needs and opportunities that are critical to the advancement of the research field. The purpose of the SPRG was to assemble the leaders in various areas of stroke research, as well as representatives of the stroke community, who could identify the current challenges and opportunities in the field. A list of recommendations and associated progress in stroke research is included in this report.
Summary of research at the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke.
Excerpt from Annual Report of Program Activities, National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke, Vol. 1: Fiscal Year 1979 The Plum group argues that man's efforts to understand his own brain represent the greatest scientific challenge of our time [and] also represent his loftiest humanistic concerns. In this context their first emphasis is on stability of research support, which should include a more realistic percentage of total health expenditures, creation of liquid reserves to buffer funding fluctuations, recognition of outstanding research laboratories by commitments for long-term support, and more generally a shift to 5 - year funding for meritorious long-range research programs.
