Abstract: This "1982 Consumer Food Survey" on the perception, knowledge, attitude of hypertensives on hypertension and salt/sodium is examined and compared to the 1976-1980 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II). The NHANES II survey indicated that the 1982 Consumer Survey somewhat underrepresented Black hypertensives and the elderly. However, demographic trends were similar in both surveys: Blacks had a higher prevalence of hypertension than whites and the rate of hypertension increased with age although the hypertensive prevalence rate in the NHANES II was higher among men than women, the rate of awareness among hypertensives was higher in women than in men -- the 1982 survey presented similar results.
