"A simplified technique is proposed for determining the self-purification coefficient in surface streams. A formula for f is derived from the basic Streeter-Phelps (1925) oxygen-sag equation. The technique proposed for use of this formula appears to offer many possibilities for studying the oxygen balance of water in both laboratory and field investigations. The value of the technique is in its simplicity. It requires only three measurements: temperature, dissolved oxygen, and BOD. The need to determine k1, k2, or time-of-flow is eliminated."--Abstract.
