Congestion, lack of mobility and rising air pollution in our cities are becoming areas of serious concern for all stakeholders: authorities, operators and commuters alike. It is also widely accepted that augmentation of public transport (PT) both in quality and quantity will provide relief. A critical issue in this context is the choice of a particular PT mode for a city. Comprehensive information on various modes, aspects of planning a city‐wide PT network and choice of mode is not easily available at one place to students, planners and city officials. This book is an attempt to bridge this gap. This book is based on author’s direct experience in planning, design and implementation of urban transport projects particularly public transport projects in India and abroad, in the overall context of urban mobility. The content of the book is largely at a conceptual level and brings out the finer points in planning. The book is divided into five parts, i.e. modes of public transport, planning a citywide public transport network, planning road‐based modes, planning rail transit and other planning issues.
Developing countries are urbanising rapidly, and it is estimated that within a generation more than 50 per cent of the developing world's population will live in cities. Public transport policy can contribute to reducing urban poverty both directly, by providing access and mobility for the poor, as well as by facilitating economic growth. This publication examines the nature and magnitude of urban transport problems in developing and transition economies, particularly with respect to the needs of the poor. It also suggests way the World Bank and other development agencies can best support the development of sustainable urban transport policies.
This book presents an innovative democratic framework that ensures public participation, based on applying principles of good governance to facilitate urban transport decision-making in an integrated and structured manner. While – given the need for mobility in cities – transport is crucial for urban development, problems such as the fragmentation of institutions, decision-making, and unequal knowledge concentrations represent major hurdles to effective governance outcomes (especially those that go beyond technical and regulatory aspects). Substantial investments continue to be pumped into the urban transportation sector, with cities lacking the necessary capacities or governance mechanisms to ensure optimal returns on these investments. The book introduces the transport governance framework, which is intended to provide an integrated and structured approach to facilitate decision-making processes in the urban transport sector, focusing on how decisions are made rather than what decisions are made. It also discusses the initial testing of the framework in several cities across India. In addition, it examines the application of the TAPC (transparency, accountability, participation, and capacity building) principles of good governance to key aspects of urban transport – policy, planning, standards, budgets, execution, and regulation.

Urban Mobility Systems in the World provides insight into the geographical organization of urban mobility systems around the world. These “systems” consist of infrastructure networks, existing transport services and people’s travel practices. Adopting a comparative approach, the book highlights the geographical diversity of mobility systems, based on case studies from Africa, North and South America, Asia and Europe. This multi-disciplinary book is organized into twelve chapters, divided into four parts. The first part gives an overview of urban mobility, and then examines the factors that determine everyday mobility in cities, revealing different travel practices among populations (poor, elderly and children). Parts 2 and 3, respectively, focus on urban public transport (trains, metros, minibuses) and active modes of transport (walking, cycling), and the related infrastructure policies. The final section examines the circulation of urban mobility analysis tools and public policy models

The National Transport Development Policy Committee (NTDPC) was constituted by the Government of India to formulate a long-term transport blueprint for the country. The NTDPC Report -- designed as a five-volume set, of which this is Volume I -- comprehensively examines all aspects of the Indian transport sector and recommends appropriate policies for governments in developing this crucial sector to enable an average annual growth rate of 8-9 per cent for the Indian economy over the next two decades. The horizon is year 2032, two decades from the beginning of the country's 12th Five Year Plan to the end of its 15th. It will be of interest to researchers and students of development studies; transportation and infrastructure studies; governance and public policy; and economics as well as policymakers, economists, public and private sector companies concerned with Indian infrastructure sectors, banks and financial institutions.
