Excerpt from John Milton: An Essay The Essay on Milton consists of a short account of the discovery and contents of the Christian Doctrine (pp. 1 a criticism of Milton's poems (pp. 4 and a defence of Milton's public conduct (pp. 30 In the course of the essay many of those literary and political problems are discussed which do not admit of a final solution, and to which each generation finds a somewhat different answer. Herein lies one of the chief educational merits of the essay; the student must be prepared throughout to think for himself and form his own conclusions, and it is scarcely necessary to add that, in order to do so, he should study for himself at any rate those portions of Milton's poems which are immediately under consideration. An endeavour is made in the notes to lighten this work by means of references and quota tions, but nothing can take the place of independent reading on the part of the student. Excerpt from John Milton, Topical Bibliography During the preparation of the Essay: on Milton, published by the Yale University Press in 1914, the author gathered for his own use most of the material embraced in this bibliography. The compilation proved of assistance to him, and it may be serviceable to others who wish to study Milton's works in con nection with the literary traditions or the contro versies that colored or even directly evoked them. In the bibliography the material has first been organ ized topically; then, under each heading, the titles are arranged chronologically, that the historical de velopment of Miltonic criticism may be made clear. Whatever difliculty such an arrangement causes will be obviated, it is hoped, by the Table of Contents and the Index of Names. In many cases, after the date of first publication, some good modern edition has been noted. But in this respect, as well as in the listing of articles from the magazines, the bib liography is frankly selective rather than complete. It aims, however, to include all the most important books and articles that bear upon the separate topics, and so to furnish the student an adequate outline guide for the study of Milton and the period in which he lived. For help and encouragement in his work the compiler owes much to Professor Charles G. Osgood, of Princeton University. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton, Vol. 1: From the Text of Dr. Newton; With a Critical Essay From early youth, Milton seems to have been characterised by a lofty and elevated mind. Educated in a distinguished seat of learning, and deeply imbued with the classical literature which at that period, perhaps, was studied with more ardour than it has ever been since, he soared to no common height in his juvenile exercises, and attained an etcellence in Latin poetry which is a topic of admiration to his biographers. The intrinsic value of his performances in this class has, indeed, been differently estimated; but it is certain that they bespeak an imagination fed with no trivial or vulgar ideas, and a soul big with high resolves, and the anticipation of future fame. Various passages in his Latin poems have been adduced as denoting the seeds of great designs which then lurked in his mind but none are more striking than the fol lowing lines of an address in English verse to his Native. Language, delivered at a college exercise, when he was nineteen years old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
