Rapid Results! shows how to make large-scale changes succeed by using 100-day results-producing projects to develop this vital implementation capability. Written by Robert H. Schaffer, Ronald N. Ashkenas, and their associates--leaders in the field of change management--Rapid Results! describes an approach that has been field-tested by real organizations of every size and description to improve performance and speed the pace of change. Rapid results projects produce results quickly, introduce new work patterns, and enable participants to learn a variety of lessons about managing change. Step by step, the book describes how the use of rapid-cycle, or 100-day, projects will multiply your organization's power to succeed at large-scale change. Schaffer and Ashkenas specifically outline the concept behind 100-day projects and show you how to Set up the architecture to implement rapid results projects Improve operational performance and also attain hard results in the soft areas of management Build rapid results into major organizational change such as reorganization, acquisition integration, and international development Use rapid results to drive leadership development and culture change

The papers published herein comprise the presentations given at the eighteenth of an annual series of clinical symposia arranged under the auspices of the Eastern Pennsylvania Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. This symposium allowed approximately 200 persons to gather and exchange ideas on the rapid laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases. The institution of the Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) method for reimbursement by both government agencies and private insurance carriers has provided a financial aspect to the established clinical reasons for rapid laboratory diagnosis. Now the health of the institution, as well as the patient, is dependent on a timely diagnosis and, hopefully, cure. Accordingly, the goal of this symposium was to present the latest developments in "same-day microbiology". In the face of stable or diminishing resources, the laboratory director is presented with many choices. Do nucleic acid probes, non instrumental ELISA techniques, or time-resolved fluorometry have a place in his or her laboratory? Should the laboratory test for newly described human pathogens such as human immunodeficiency virus or human papilloma virus? Can rapid techniques supplant conventional methods? Or are they merely adjunctive? This symposium attempted to assist in the formulation of informed decisions. Bruce Kleger Donald Jungkind Eileen Rinks Linda A. Miller vii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We would like to thank the Eastern Pennsylvania Branch of t~e American Society for Microbiology for sponsoring this symposium and for making this publication possible. We especially thank the Symposium Committee for their diligent work in organizing an informative and successful symposium.
Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners from around the world gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), the authoritative program for the tunneling profession, to learn about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique field. The information presented helps professionals keep pace with the ever-changing and growing tunneling industry. This book includes the full text of 106 papers presented at the 2021 conference. Though the tunneling industry continues to develop both technically and contractually, one notable adaptation of the last two years has been the onset and management of COVID-19. The hallmarks of tunneling professionals include adaptability, resiliency, optimism, and management of change. These are traits that have been recently put to an entirely new challenge over the last year or so. We have truly witnessed why what we do is deemed “essential” infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted each of us, personally and professionally, and while times have been hard, we are fortunate to work in a field that is able to meet the challenge and thrive thereafter. Congratulations are in order to everyone in our industry for keeping the planning and development of projects moving forward and for maintaining safe and productive worksites in these challenging times.
In recent years there has been increased interest in the possibility of rapid microbiological methods offering enhanced potential error detection capabilities. However, these methods raise a number of questions, such as how to validate new methods, will they be accepted by the pharmacopoeias, and, most importantly, how will the regulators respond?
There are significant challenges in food analysis, problems with food contamination and authentication, and a worldwide need to ensure food safety. This book provides a description of antibody-based technologies used in food analysis. It focuses on key applications, outlining the approaches used, their advantages and limitations, and describes future areas for development. Chapters are written by experts in the field, critically examining each of the currently used methodologies and highlighting new evolving technologies, such as lab-on-chip and microfluidics-based devices and biosensors. Case studies demonstrating the utility of each of the methods described are included. Important introductory chapters cover sample preparation for analysis and statistical sampling necessary for quality control for verification of results. An overview chapter highlighting major analytical issues and areas that have specific requirements, e.g. food authentication, is provided. Researchers and scientists in the field who have to acquire, verify and use technologies for food analysis, food producers and processors, food safety and testing laboratories, and government agencies will all find this a useful addition to their library.
On the 15th January 2022 the underwater Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha?apai volcano, located in the north of Tongatapu (the main island of Tonga), erupted following several minor eruptions over the previous weeks. It was reported as the largest recorded eruption in the past 30 years. On 14 January 2022, the Tonga Geological Services issued an alert of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcanic activity and a tsunami marine warning. The powerful eruption subsequently resulted in a tsunami in Tonga and the surrounding region, with effects reaching countries including Fiji, America Samoa and as far as Chile and Peru. With around 86 percent of Tongans engaged in agriculture, the impacts of the eruption and tsunami may have impacted all agriculture sectors, including fisheries, crops and livestock. The volcanic plume reached 30 km into the atmosphere, releasing volcanic gases and aerosols that were subsequently carried over neighbouring countries, potentially impacting public health and the environment. The Government of Tonga declared a state of emergency on 16 January 2022.
