Few areas in the transportation sector have experienced more dramatic change or provoked a more heightened awareness of its promise than the rail-truck sector of intermodal transportation. To assist managers in this field and to keep researchers abreast of current published materials, a Task Force of the Committee on Intermodal Freight Transport of the Transportation Research Board has prepared an annotated bibliography of research completed or published in 1981. In all, 36 items have been included. It is anticipated that annual updates will be made to the bibliography to ensure a central source of information on rail-truck intermodal topics. The citation is in standard format and is followed by a brief description of the document's contents. Members of the intermodal bibliography committee summarized the major issue(s), findings and conclusions covered by the report, and provided some account of specific information to be found in the documents. In many cases, an author or agency abstract has also been used, in whole or part.
The General Accounting Office (GAO) examined the status and potential benefits of intermodal rail transportation, in which loaded containers or trailers are transferred intact from truck to rail and back to truck. Specifically, GAO (1) examined recent trends in intermodal rail transportation, (2) assessed the prospects for more intermodal cooperation between the rail and trucking industries, (3) identified problems that limit the effectiveness and benefits of intermodal transportation, and (4) considered whether any federal initiatives might be helpful in encouraging intermodal cooperation.
