In describing the geomorphological heritage of Scotland, this volume offers a remarkable account of how the natural environment responded in terms of landforms, processes and plant communities, to severe climatic change as the Quaternary era progressed over the last two million years. This legacy, as preserved in the 138 nationally important GCR sites described, documents a remarkable diversity of landforms in a relatively small area. The rugged highland contrast with the rolling hills and flat plains found further south, while the western and northern islands, together with the highly-indented coastline add further to the scenic diversity. How this variety of landscapes came into being, the forces which shaped it , and the climatic extremes which drove it, are the themes explored in this volume.
Studies in the Scottish Lateglacial Environment presents information on environmental reconstructions and dramatic changes, as well as the important implications of studies of the Lateglacial environment for Quaternary studies and modern climatic variations. Composed of 10 chapters, this book begins with a review of the Late Devensian glaciation in north-east Scotland. Then, detailed evidence concerning Lateglacial sea-level changes in the Earn-Tay area and their relationship to deglaciation is presented. Subsequent chapters explore the validity of the Oban-Ford Moraine, the only pre-Loch Lomond Readvance moraine remaining virtually unchallenged in the literature; reconstruction of Lateglacial and early Flandrian environments in south-west Scotland; and the fauna in marine sediments at Lochgilphead. Other chapters describe results of pollen-stratigraphic investigations at six Lateglacial sites in the southern and eastern Grampian Highlands; analyses of biological and chemical variables from sediment profiles from lochs in northern Scotland; and radiocarbon dates that are related to pollen profiles from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. This book will be of value to students of Quaternary, as this text provides an integrated survey of available information in this field.

This book is the first of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial workers, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared.The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated are included. For major parts of Europe also the extent of the maximum Eemian transgression has been indicated. The digital maps in this volume cover all of Europe and parts of northwestern Siberia. Both overview maps and more detailed maps are provided.
This book presents the basic concepts of quantitative soil science and, within this framework, it seeks to construct a new body of knowledge. There is a growing need for quantitative approach in soil science, which arises from a general demand for improved economic production and environmental management. Pedometrics can be defined as the development and application of statistical and mathematical methods applicable to data analysis problems in soil science. This book shows how pedometrics can address key soil-related questions from a quantitative point of view. It addresses four main areas which are akin to the problems of conventional pedology: (i) Understanding the pattern of soil distribution in character space – soil classification, (ii) Understanding soil spatial and temporal variation, (iii) Evaluating the utility and quality of soil and ultimately, (iv) Understanding the genesis of soil. The Cairngorms area is arguably the most significant for nature conservation in the British Isles and contains its largest National Park. In this book, 35 authors, drawing on published and unpublished sources, present an up-to-date review of the area's natural features, including plants, animals, habitats, geology and landforms. The review falls into three parts. The first and largest part describes the area's rich diversity of nature, with each chapter summarising recent research findings, trends and conservation issues for a different landform, habitat or species group.
