This book presents the general theory of categorical closure operators to gether with a number of examples, mostly drawn from topology and alge bra, which illustrate the general concepts in several concrete situations. It is aimed mainly at researchers and graduate students in the area of cate gorical topology, and to those interested in categorical methods applied to the most common concrete categories. Categorical Closure Operators is self-contained and can be considered as a graduate level textbook for topics courses in algebra, topology or category theory. The reader is expected to have some basic knowledge of algebra, topology and category theory, however, all categorical concepts that are recurrent are included in Chapter 2. Moreover, Chapter 1 contains all the needed results about Galois connections, and Chapter 3 presents the the ory of factorization structures for sinks. These factorizations not only are essential for the theory developed in this book, but details about them can not be found anywhere else, since all the results about these factorizations are usually treated as the duals of the theory of factorization structures for sources. Here, those hard-to-find details are provided. Throughout the book I have kept the number of assumptions to a min imum, even though this implies that different chapters may use different hypotheses. Normally, the hypotheses in use are specified at the beginning of each chapter and they also apply to the exercise set of that chapter.

The aim of this book is to present a broad overview of the theory and applications related to functional calculus. In this volume, the authors study asymptotics of the geometry and spectral theory of degenerating sequences of finite volume hyperbolic manifolds of three dimensions. Thurston's hyperbolic surgery theorem assets the existence of non-trivial sequences of finite volume hyperbolic three manifolds which converge to a three manifold with additional cusps. In the geometric aspect of their study, the authors use the convergence of hyperbolic metrics on the thick parts of the manifolds under consideration to investigate convergentce of tubes in the manifolds of the sequence to cusps of the limiting manifold. In the specral theory aspect of the work, they prove convergence of heat kernels. They then define a regualrized heat race associated to any finite volume, complete, hyperbolic three manifold, and study its asymptotic behaviour through degeneration. As an application of the analysis of the regularized heat trace, they study asymptotic behaviours of the spectral zeta function, determinant of the Laplacian, Selberg zeta function, and spectral counting functions through degeneration. The authors' methods are an adaptation to three dimensions of the earlier work of Jorgenson and Lundelius who investigated the asymptotic behaviour of spectral functions on degenerating families of finite area hyperbolic Riemann surfaces.

In 1836-1837 Sturm and Liouville published a series of papers on second order linear ordinary differential operators, which started the subject now known as the Sturm-Liouville problem. In 1910 Hermann Weyl published an article which started the study of singular Sturm-Liouville problems. Since then, the Sturm-Liouville theory remains an intensely active field of research, with many applications in mathematics and mathematical physics. The purpose of the present book is (a) to provide a modern survey of some of the basic properties of Sturm-Liouville theory and (b) to bring the reader to the forefront of knowledge about some aspects of this theory. To use the book, only a basic knowledge of advanced calculus and a rudimentary knowledge of Lebesgue integration and operator theory are assumed. An extensive list of references and examples is provided and numerous open problems are given.
