In Psychidae Arnscheid and Weidlich provide for the first time a complete tool for identifying the European bag worm moths. The book will provide a sufficient overview of the systematics and distribution of the European Psychidae. A total of 246 species is recognized. Description and diagnoses are accompanied by colour figures of the adults, usually depicting variation of male and female if the latter are winged. Black and white photographs of the male genitalia of most species (excluding parts of Naryciinae and Taleporiinae due to their similarity) are given for the first time. Notes on distribution and bionomics are added for every species. One new subfamily, one new genus and three new species are described.
Comprises about 1,324 species. This is 300 more than any figure given for Psychidae so far.

Background The renowned German reference work Handbook of Zoology was founded in the 1920's by Professor Willi Kükenthal in Berlin and treated the complete animal kingdom from single cell organisms to mammals in eight thematic volumes: Volume I Protozoa, Porifera, Colenteratea, Mesozoa (1925); Volume II Vermes (1933/34); Volume III Arthropoda ex. Insecta (1927/1932); Volume IV Arthropoda: Insecta; Volume V Solenogastres, Mollusca, Echinoderma (1925); Volume VI Pisces / Amphibia (1930); Volume VII Reptilia / Aves (1931); Volume VIII Mammalia. The Volumes IV Arthropoda: Insecta and VII Mammalia continued publication into the present with the most recent contributions in English language. This study is a preliminary revision of the tineoid family Psychidae of North and South America (including the West Indies). The purpose of the present study is to re-evaluate the decisions of earlier workers; to complete and, where necessary, to correct their conclusions; and to investigate and utilize several taxonomic criteria in order facilitate identification and a more comprehensive understanding of the insects presently included in this family.

Arthropods are invertebrates that constitute over 90% of the animal kingdom, and their bio-ecology is closely linked with global functioning and survival. Arthropods play an important role in maintaining the health of ecosystems, provide livelihoods and nutrition to human communities, and are important indicators of environmental change. Yet the population trends of several arthropods species show them to be in decline. Arthropods constitute a dominant group with 1.2 million species influencing earth’s biodiversity. Among arthropods, insects are predominant, with ca. 1 million species and having evolved some 350 million years ago. Arthropods are closely associated with living and non-living entities alike, making the ecosystem services they provide crucially important. In order to be effective, plans for the conservation of arthropods and ecosystems should include a mixture of strategies like protecting key habitats and genomic studies to formulate relevant policies for in situ and ex situ conservation. This two-volume book focuses on capturing the essentials of arthropod inventories, biology, and conservation. Further, it seeks to identify the mechanisms by which arthropod populations can be sustained in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and by means of which certain problematic species be managed without producing harmful environmental side-effects. This edited compilation includes chapters contributed by over 80 biologists on a wide range of topics embracing the diversity, distribution, utility and conservation of arthropods and select groups of insect taxa. More importantly, it describes in detail the mechanisms of sustaining arthropod ecosystems, services and populations. This comprehensive catalog of viral diseases of two large groups of arthropods updates the previous surveys of the world's literature published by Hughes in 1957 and by Martignoni and Langston in 1960. This computer-based catalog lists over 600 species of insects and mites, each reported to have one or more of 21 viral diseases or disease groups, for a total of over 900 host-virus records. The catalog consists of two lists. In the first one the hosts are listed in taxonomic sequence (order, family, genus, species). Species appear alphabetically within each genus, genera alphabetically within each family, and families alphabetically within each order. In the second list, the hosts are listed alphabetically by specific names, without consideration of the higher taxa, The host-virus records are stored on computer tape; additions and corrections to the master file can be made easily, and thus the catalog can be revised without much effort.
