Excerpt from Fragments, in Prose and Verse The following pages will not be found to contain a single sentence which can give pain to any human being and though nothing in this collection was written with a view to publication, yet as the delicacy which always shrunk from observation cannot now be wounded by praise or blame, it is, I h0pe, allowable to remove the veil which an excess of modest reserve threw. Excerpt from Prose and Verse Has the south a literature of its own? This question is well propounded in view of an article from the pen of Don Piatt, the noted litterateur of Washington City, in which he -sneeringly remarks, in a comment upon Southern books. That one village of New England produces more books than all the Southern States together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Remains in Verse and Prose: With a Preface and Memoir The Editor of the following Poems has been induced, after the lapse of many years, to reprint a limited number of copies. Arthur Henry Hallam had the happiness to possess the friendship of one, then as young as himself, whose name has risen to the highest place among our living poets. What this distinguished person felt for one so early torn from him, has been displayed in those beautiful poems, intitled "In Memoriam," which both here and in America have been read with admiration and delight. Excerpt from Miscellanies in Prose and Verse Gentle reader (readers are always gentle), should you read this preface before reading the whole or a part of the contents of this book, it may give you some idea what you may expect. I, the writer, have principally touched upon scenes, objects, and subjects belonging this sublunary world, holding the conservative notion that it is best for a man to keep within his own sphere. I have ventured in one lofty flight to touch on those luminaries, the sun, moon, and stars, but not so as to affect their evolutionary motions, or throw any new light on them. The deepest subject that I have tried to fathom is coal, a subject that might give much light if properly handled, though some consider it a miner question that may be easily settled. As I have not been a student in any department of science or learning, I do not presume to teach, therefore there will be found in this volume little that is instructive. To some. Excerpt from Words and Days: A Table-Book of Prose and Verse I do not know that the general plan of the book needs any defence, except perhaps to those jeunes féroces who are angry at the antiquated attractions of the Past being put forward as rivals to the Present, and more angry still at any present lovers of these elder beauties assuming the office of heralds and harbingers thereto Even they might be softened by the commixture of old and new here, which must be admitted to be arranged on no grudging scale as regards contemporaries. Excerpt from Heart Throbs: In Prose and Verse N ow, I want you to help me edit the national, and I am going to give ten thousand dollars to those who will do it. What I want is real heart throbs - those things that make us all kin; those things that endure - the classics Of our own lives. Send me a clipping, a story, an anecdote, or a selection that has touched your heart. It is in the American homes that I am searching for the literature that endures - those things that touch and pul sate with the best and noblest emotions and sentiment. It may be in that old school book in the attic; it may be be tween the leaves of the family Bible; it may be in mother's scrap book, yellow with age and hallowed by sacred memories; it may have been given you when you could scarcely read through the tears; it may be one of father's jovial jokes pasted on the side of his desk, or in that drawer long since unopened; it may be that clip ping well worn from taking out of the pocketbook Often to show a friend for a hearty laugh. Wholesome good cheer, humor, com fort, hope - those things that make dark days endurable and sunny days enduring. In this way I hope to get those priceless little gems which you have always looked for in your favorite periodical. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
