This compilation assembles papers representing 40 years of unpublished data on Canada geese in the Maritimes, papers mostly unknown outside the agencies that commissioned the surveys or studies. Assembled information is also interpreted in the context of flyway and nation and related to the wider Canada goose picture. Fifteen chapters present and discuss information from the individual goose staging and wintering areas in the Maritimes. These are followed by chapters on the few Canada geese that breed there, on the habitats and foods used by staging and wintering geese, on the longer movements of geese as shown by band recoveries and neck-collar sightings, and on the annual kill of Canada geese by hunters and subsistence users in eastern Canada. A final chapter then discusses the place of these goose stocks in the wider Atlantic flyway Canada goose populations.
This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.
Describes the federal marine science and fisheries research programs that are carried out at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, the Halifax Fisheries Research Laboratory, and the St. Andrews Biological Station.
The field of ecosystem health explores the interactions between natural systems, human health, and social organization. As decision makers require a sound, modular approach to environmental management and sustainable development, ecosystem health assessment indicators are increasingly used across any number of applications.
