This volume presents the proceedings of the 5th International Conference Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe (PARLE '94), held in Athens, Greece in July 1994. PARLE is the main Europe-based event on parallel processing. Parallel processing is now well established within the high-performance computing technology and of stategic importance not only to the computer industry, but also for a wide range of applications affecting the whole economy. The 60 full papers and 24 poster presentations accepted for this proceedings were selected from some 200 submissions by the international program committee; they cover the whole field and give a timely state-of-the-art report on research and advanced applications in parallel computing.

Exploring the increase of performance of networked equipment made possible by new communication supports, this publication should be of particular interest to engineers, computer scientists, EDP managers, R&D professionals, and other researchers, manufacturers, and operators involved in the telecommunications industry. The first is the multimedia communication systems and, more specifically, the distributed multimedia aspects. The second is the enhanced functions and facilities for the network and transport layers to support the changing application environment and to exploit the new networks already, or soon to be, available. The third area is the search for efficient implementations and for high performance systems.
This work discusses the issues among people creating computer communication technology, the people using computer communication, the people impacted by it, and the regulators responsible for balancing the interest of these multiple groups.
Welcome to the fourth IFIP workshop on protocols for high speed networks in Vancouver. This workshop follows three very successful workshops held in Ziirich (1989), Palo Alto (1990) and Stockholm (1993) respectively. We received a large number of papers in response to our call for contributions. This year, forty papers were received of which sixteen were presented as full papers and four were presented as poster papers. Although we received many excellent papers the program committee decided to keep the number of full presentations low in order to accommodate more discussion in keeping with the format of a workshop. Many people have contributed to the success of this workshop including the members of the program committee who, with the additional reviewers, helped make the selection of the papers. We are thankful to all the authors of the papers that were submitted. We also thank several organizations which have contributed financially to this workshop, specially NSERC, ASI, CICSR, UBC, MPR Teltech and Newbridge Networks.
