The International Conference on Gravitation and Astrophysics(ICGA) is to serve the needs of research workers in gravitation and astrophysics in the Asia-Pacific region. This proceedings covers a wide and hot area of research, including cosmological model, gravitational lensing, precision measurement of G, CMB, Kerr space-time, gravitational wave, the LISA, LIGO, LCGT projects in Japan, black hole, dark matter, Yang-Mills gravity, neutron star, type la supernovae, quasi-local energy, anti-de Sitter space-time.
Quantum measurement (Le., a measurement which is sufficiently precise for quantum effects to be essential) was always one of the most impor tant points in quantum mechanics because it most evidently revealed the difference between quantum and classical physics. Now quantum measure ment is again under active investigation, first of all because of the practical necessity of dealing with highly precise and complicated measurements. The nature of quantum measurement has become understood much bet ter during this new period of activity, the understanding being expressed by the concept of decoherence. This term means a physical process lead ing from a pure quantum state (wave function) of the system prior to the measurement to its state after the measurement which includes classical elements. More concretely, decoherence occurs as a result of the entangle ment of the measured system with its environment and results in the loss of phase relations between components of the wave function of the measured system. Decoherence is essentially nothing else than quantum measurement, but considered from the point of view of its physical mechanism and resolved in time. The present book is devoted to the two concepts of quantum measure ment and decoherence and to their interrelation, especially in the context of continuous quantum measurement.

The author of the provocative works The Emperor's New Mind and Shadows of the Mind now presents a masterful summary of the complex ideas presented in those books, highlighting areas of research where he perceives there are major unsolved problems that strike at the heart of our understanding of the laws of physics. Jaybee Corbell awoke after more than 200 years as a corpsicle -- in someone else's body, and under sentence of instant annihilation if he made a wrong move while they were training him for a one-way mission to the stars. But Corbell picked his time and made his own move. Once he was outbound, where the Society that ruled Earth could not reach him, he headed his starship toward the galactic core, where the unimaginable energies of the Universe wrenched the fabric of time and space and promised final escape from his captors. Then he returned to an Earth eons older than the one he'd left...a planet that had had 3,000,000 years to develop perils he had never dreamed of -- perils that became nightmares that he had to escape...somehow!

The Relativists and Cosmologists in India organized an international conference in Goa, India, in 1987, known as the International Conference on Gravitation and Cosmology (ICGC-87). Encouraged by the success of this conference it was decided to have such a meeting periodically, once in every four years. Accordingly, ICGC- 91 was held at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, India. The third International Conference on Gravitation and Cosmology, (ICGC-95) was held at the Inter-University centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, IUCAA, Pune, India during December 13 - 19, 1995. This series of conferences is co-sponsored by the Indian Association for General Relativity and Gravitation (lAGRG). The Conference had 16 plenary lectures and five workshops altogether. There were three plenary lectures per day and two workshops running parallel each day. We were fortunate in getting plenary speakers who are leading experts in their respective fields drawn from all over the world. The conference was attended by about 105 persons from India and 55 from abroad. We thank all the contributors who have taken time to write up their lectures amidst their busy schedule. We regret we could not get the contributions of a few plenary speakers. We would also like to thank the members of Organizing Committees who have worked hard to make this conference a success.
