Excerpt from Elementary Latin: An Introductory Course In the preparation of these lessons, the author has kept in view the necessity for simplicity of statement and for the avoidance of unnecessary details. The purpose has been to furnish drill on the forms and constructions of most frequent occurrence, leaving the more difficult syntactical relations and the forms less frequently employed for a later point in the course. A few topics included in the lessons near the end of the book have been given place in order to meet the needs of teachers who prefer a more complete presentation of Latin grammar in the first year. These topics may, however, be omitted and the work of the lessons made to consist of the translation exercises and drill on the essential constructions and forms previously given. Instead of the usual arrangement of lessons which must be divided into two or three assignments, the plan has been adopted of providing short lessons which can usually be covered in single recitations. Naturally, no such plan can be, made to correspond absolutely to the needs of every class, and occasionally a teacher may find it necessary to omit or to leave for later review, part of the exercises of a lesson. But the presentation of forms and syntax in small units will, it is hoped, tend to prevent confusion in the mind of the pupil and to aid the teacher in planning the work of the class. Excerpt from Elementary Latin Grammar In employing comparative philology in this book, I have always kept in View the practical nature of the work, and therefore have given only so much as I have deemed suitable. In most cases I have stated doubts where doubts exist but in a few I have said nothing of the matter. Thus I have marked the stems of the verbs in a, e, and i of the fourth conjugation long I have made the e of eba part of the word denoting the imperfect; I have assumed the 77 in the present of the third conjugation as a euphonic vowel, - though all these points have been doubted. Excerpt from An Elementary Latin Grammar This Grammar is intended to give such information as is necessary for starting a learner in Latin. The troublesome nomenclature common to many School Grammars is as far as possible avoided; and a Short Catechism of Syntax takes the place of the usual Latin Rules. In the treatment of Latin Accidence the beaten tracks pointed out by immemorial usage have been generally ad hered to. The principal change is the subdivision of the Perfect into two separate Tenses, conformably to its twofold usage, (a) as 3. Present Past, (6) as a Simple Past. This alteration will compel every boy who meets with a Perfect to stop, if only as part of his parsing lesson, and re ect which Tense is meant. It also enables us to group the Tenses in the paradigm under the heads of Primary and Historic, a distinction important for boys to remember. Excerpt from A First and Second Latin Book and Practical Grammar In announcing a fifth edition of the First and Second Latin Book, the Editor very gladly embraces the Oppor. Tunity a 'orded him, of brie y stating what changes and improvements have been made, in order to render the work more worthy of the unprecedented success which it has met with. At the suggestion of several eminent practical teachers, the matter formerly in the Appendix, and intro. Ductory to the Exercises in the Second Latin Book, has been entirely rearranged, considerably augmented, and put into a shape better suited to the purposes of those who wish to use the Second Latin Book instead of an ordinary Gram mar. There has also been added a carefully drawn up Synopsis of Latin Syntax, which may be used to peculiar advantage in drilling boys in the Exercises and Reading Lessons. The Editor indulges the hope that these changes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
