The diversity of propagules, or simply ``pleomorphy'' (or ``pleomorphism''), is a characteristic of most fungi. In recent years, knowledge with respect to pleomorphy and its dramatic examples has increased enormously. Data on teleomorph-anamorph connections and pleoanamorph (synanamorph) connections together with the analysis of conidium ontogeny cannot be ignored in considering the taxonomy of the major groups of higher fungi today. The purpose of this book is to shed light on those aspects mentioned above, to contribute toward a better knowledge and understanding of pleomorphic fungi, and to present modern trends associated with the taxonomy, morphology, and nomenclature of pleomorphic fungi. This publication was inspired by the 1983 Third International Mycological Congress at Tokyo, and although it is not intended as the symposium proceedings, symposium speakers make up the nucleus of the book. It is hoped that this book will aid in the development of current knowledge on fungal systematics and provide a useful reference not only to specialists in systematic mycology, but also to researchers, teachers, and university students broadly interested in pleomorphic fungi.

This 10th edition, of the acclaimed reference work, has more than 21,000 entries, and provides the most complete listing available of generic names of fungi, their families and orders, their attributes and descriptive terms. For each genus, the authority, the date of publication, status, systematic position, number of accepted species, distribution, and key references are given. Diagnoses of families and details of orders and higher categories are included for all groups of fungi. In addition, there are biographic notes, information on well-known metabolites and mycotoxins, and concise accounts of almost all pure and applied aspects of the subject (including citations of important literature). Mycologists have been searching for a better system of classification of Fungi Imperfecti than that based on mature morphology. This volume documents an intensive phase of that search. It is largely an account of the proceedings of the First International Specialists' Workshop Conference on Criteria and Terminology in the Classification of Fungi Imperfecti held at the Environmental Sciences Centre of the University of Calgary, Kananaskis, Alberta. The invited contributors, all mycologists of international reputation, have had long experience with Fungi Imperfecti. The first fifteen chapters follow the course of the conference: they reproduce the formal papers and the lively discussion which followed. Chapter 16 describes a new, experimental scheme of classification distilled from the conclusions reached at Kananaskis. Four chapters concerned with the application of this scheme and with a variety of techniques now being used to extend knowledge of the Fungi Imperfecti round out the volume. The text is illustrated throughout with numerous photographs and drawings. In editing the volume, Professor Kendrick has given the text continuity by inserting short linking passages. The result is a readable and very informative account which conveys the unique atmosphere of this important conference.
Aquatic hyphomycetes were discovered 50 years ago by C.T. Ingold. They remained a relatively obscure group until their role as intermediaries between deciduous leaves and stream invertebrates was established some 20 years ago. This book, for the first time, provides a comprehensive summary and critical evaluation of the biology and ecology of these organisms. Aspecial effort was made to evaluate the potential and actual insight that have been or will be derived from work in related disciplines such as the ecology of other fungal groups, stream ecology, or population ecology. The topics treated include the basic life history of the fungi and the potential role of wood, a discussion of how the fungi have adjusted to life in running water, their interactions with invertebrates, the attachment and germination of their spores, what is known about sexual reproduction, how water chemistry may influence their distribution and activity, how they react to human degradation of their environment, and a summary of the research done on the Indian subcontinent. The volume is of special interest to mycologists and stream ecologists and should facilitate the entry of new workers into this exciting area.

Conidial fungi are anamorphic (asexual) fungi of presumed ascomycetous or basidiomycetous origin.
