A translation of a Russian study on pile foundation in collapsible soils, revised and updated for the 1995 English edition. The contents cover such topics as collapsible soils as basis for structures, and designing pile foundations for buildings and structures with collapsible soils.
Geotechnical Fundamentals and Applications in Construction. New Materials, Structures, Technologies and Calculations contains the papers presented at the International Conference on Geotechnical Fundamentals and Applications in Construction. New Materials, Structures, Technologies and Calculations (GFAC 2019, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 6-8 February 2019). The contributions present the latest research findings, developments, and applications in the areas of geotechnics, soil mechanics, foundations, geological engineering and share experiences in the design of complex geotechnical objects, and are grouped in 8 sections: • Analytical decisions and numerical modeling for foundations; • Design and construction in geologically hazardous conditions; • Methods for surveying the features of dispersed, rocky soils and structurally unstable soils; • Exploration, territory improvement and reconstruction in conditions of compact urban planning and enterprises, etc.; • Construction, reconstruction and exploitation of infrastructure facilities in different soil conditions; • R&D support and quality control of new materials, design and technology solutions in constructing bases, foundations, underground and surface constructions; • Condition survey and accident evolution analysis in construction; • Up-to-date monitoring techniques in building construction and exploitation. Geotechnical Fundamentals and Applications in Construction. New Materials, Structures, Technologies and Calculations collects the state-of-the-art in geotechnology and construction, and will be of interest to academia and professionals in geotechnics, soil mechanics, foundation engineering and geological engineering.
In recent decades the development of unsaturated soil mechanics has been remarkable, resulting in momentous advances in fundamental knowledge, testing techniques, computational procedures, prediction methodologies and geotechnical practice. The advances have spanned the full spectrum of theory and practice. In addition, unsaturated materials exhibiting complex behaviour such as residual soils, swelling soils, compacted soils, collapsing soils, tropical soils and solid wastes have been integrated in a common understanding of shared behaviour features. It is also noteworthy that unsaturated soil mechanics has proved surprisingly fruitful in expanding to other neighbouring areas such as swelling rocks, rockfill mechanics, and freezing soils. As a consequence, geotechnical engineering involving unsaturated soils can be now approached from a more rational and systematic perspective leading towards an improved and more effective practice. Unsaturated Soils contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Unsaturated Soil (Barcelona, Spain, 6-8 September 2010). They report significant advances in the areas of unsaturated soil behaviour, testing techniques, constitutive and numerical modelling and applications. The areas of application include soil-atmosphere interaction, foundations, slopes, embankments, pavements, geoenviromental problems and emerging topics. They are complemented by three keynote lectures and three general reports covering general issues of modelling, testing and applications. Unsaturated Soils is a comprehensive record of the state-of-the art in unsaturated soil mechanics and a sound basis for further progress in the future. The two volumes will serve as an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners interested in unsaturated soils.
The Geotechnical Engineering Handbook brings together essential information related to the evaluation of engineering properties of soils, design of foundations such as spread footings, mat foundations, piles, and drilled shafts, and fundamental principles of analyzing the stability of slopes and embankments, retaining walls, and other earth-retaining structures. The Handbook also covers soil dynamics and foundation vibration to analyze the behavior of foundations subjected to cyclic vertical, sliding and rocking excitations and topics addressed in some detail include: environmental geotechnology and foundations for railroad beds.
This volume contains papers and reports from the Conference held in Romania, June 2000. The book covers many topics, for example, place, role and content of geotechnical engineering in civil, environmental and earthquake engineering.

Soil Mechanics - Version 2 is designed as a comprehensive reference book on both soil mechanics and soil testing. With over 700 pages, we have included, in their entirety, the most common laboratory procedures for soils testing, which is rare to see in soil mechanics textbooks. This manual is primarily intended for the active practitioner in the field, although it is certainly a useful reference for students.
The book is primarily intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering. It is also useful for the students of AMIE and a diploma course in civil engineering. The book is planned as a text for the first course in foundation engineering and presents the principles and practices of selection and design of foundation for structures in a simple and concise manner. Codal references have been given to acquaint the students with prevalent methodologies adopted in practise in the country. The book provides topics of wide interest such as machine foundation, foundation on problematic soil and ground improvement techniques. A large number of solved examples and multiple choice questions are included to help readers for easy understanding of the principle of design and memorising important details for practical application. The information contained in the book is also helpful for the scholars pursuing research study and practicing engineers confronted in the field. Key Features • Simple and systematic presentation of the subject matter.• A large number of solved and unsolved problems for practice. • MCQs with answers to help students appearing in competitive examinations—GATE, IES, IAS etc. • Annexure for ready references in different allied engineering topics.
