Excerpt from Poems of Paul Hamilton Hayne It were superfluous to enter upon any criticism of his poems, nor is this the place for it. They are left with the reader, who, if he cannot of himself, find therein the aromatic freshness of the woods, - the swaying incense of the cathedral-like aisles of pines, - the sough of dying summer winds, - the glint of lonely pools, and the brooding notes of leaf-hidden mocking-birds, - would not be able to discern them, however carefully the critic might point them out. Excerpt from Paul Hamilton Hayne This study is the first book-length treatment of Paul Hamilton Hayne's poetry. There are, of course, theses and dissertations on various aspects of Hayne's life and work, and Kate H. Becker's Paul Hamilton H ayne: Life and Letters (1951) offers a summary compiled from already published materials. Far more valuable are the collections of letters and correspondence edited by D. M. Mckeithan and Charles Duffy and the discussions of Hayne as critic and man of letters by Jay B. Hubbell and Edd W. Parks. Hayne's poetry, however, has hitherto never been fully considered. After sketching his life and literary career, I have therefore concentrated on Hayne as poet by considering his collections in turn (including one put together after his death btis wife and son) and by discussing the more important poems in each. Since few of these pieces have been treated in any detail by twentieth century critics, I have examined all the major collections of -hayne papers (particularly those in the chief repository at Per kins Library, Duke University) and have tried to present certain basic facts regarding the composition, publication, and the then contemporary criticism of both individual poems and collections. Moreover, I have drawn comparisons and traced developments in Hayne's ideas and techniques. I have, wherever possible, let his poems speak for themselves because they are not well known, nor are they available in paperback editions or readily accessible in many libraries. There is not, however, sufficient space to sub ject individual poems to full-scale critical analysis, but within the contextual limits of this approach, I have been critical withal. Excerpt from Henry Timrod, Man and Poet: A Critical Study To have been his birthplace, said Longfellow, is a distinct honor. Here he received his early training and his prepartion for college in private schools. One of his schoolmates was the eminent philologist, Dr. Basil L. Gildersleeve, now of the Johns Hopkins University, himself a gifted man of letters. His deskmate and life long friend was Paul Hamilton Hayne, who was destined to become an equally distinguished and more fortunate brother poet. I well remember, says Hayne, the exultation with which he showed me one morning his earliest consecutive attempt at verse-making. Our down east schoolmaster, however, could boast of no turn for sentiment, and having remarked us hobnobbing, meanly assaulted us in the rear, effectually quenching, for the time, all aesthetic enthusiasm. That he has been generous in his praise of me affects me much. You are an Englishman, he seems to say, leaning forward as it were on the threshold of his land. Come in and live with us, in your books And here I am, my inner self, ready, in this new garb, to face What friends I have.
