An historical narrative of epic scope, An American Passion is a story of adventure, political intrigue, war, and romance set on the Northern Plains during the last several decades of the Nineteenth Century. While faithfully adhering to the sketchy and often contradictory historical record, the epic offers a vivid, imaginatively realized account of the life of the mysterious Crazy Horse, legendary war chief of the Lakota Sioux. A man who typically let his actions do his speaking for him and who died young, assassinated at the hands of the U.S. Government in his mid-thirties, Crazy Horse's story is related by five different narrators. An American Passion opens with a prologue spoken by the Missouri River, the mighty river of the Great Plains. With the historical context established, Crazy Horse's life, from his birth to his death little more than a year following his great victory over George Armstrong Custer at the Little Big Horn, is related retrospectively by his grieving father Worm, a notable medicine man of the tribe. The net major section of the epic is narrated by the woman for whom Crazy Horse risked his life and the welfare of his people. Black Buffalo Woman's tale is a tragedy in the vein of Romeo and Juliet's. Unlike the story of Shakespeare's fallen lovers, however, the love story of Crazy Horse and Black Buffalo Woman has never been related in its full, gripping complexity as it is in An American Passion. Amazingly, after his nearly fatal attempt to take Black Buffalo Woman as his wife Crazy Horse went on to marry, and the third major narration of An American Passion is that of Black Shawl, his fiercely loyal and devoted widow and the mother of his only known child. Telling her story at about the time Sitting Bull was returning to the reservation after having been released from prison by the U.S. Government, a bitter but not a hopeless woman, Black Shawl focuses on the early death of her daughter by Crazy Horse and on her final days in captivity with Crazy Horse. The epic concludes with the account of He Dog, a loyal friend of Crazy Horse, having fought beside him throughout his days as the greatest warrior among the Sioux. He Dog lived to be nearly a hundred years old and served as a respected judge in the Indian courts on the reservation. Told from the vantage point of 1910, some 33 years after the killing of Crazy Horse, He Dog's narration is largely a tribute to his friend, a consideration of the differences in character and temperament between himself and Crazy Horse, and an elegy to what might have been and, perhaps, may some day yet be. In the depth and breadth of its portrayal of major figures in Crazy Horse's life who are little more than footnotes in the historical record, and in the insight it offers into the heart and mind of a great and complicated man, a man who lived and died, ultimately, as an enigma even to the people who revered (and revere) him, An American Passion is a unique, emotionally engaging account of the final days of the resistance of the Native Americans of the Northern Plains to that juggernaut of forces which, having achieved its objective, destroyed a culture, though not a people.
This book addresses a variety of issues through the examination of heroic figures in children's popular literature, comics, film, and television.

As early as 50 AD, Christians had gotten away from knowing who Jesus really is. Our generation is no different. In every decade we, as Americans, lost something important that we couldn't afford to lose: In the 1950's, we lost innocence In the 1960's, we lost respect for authority In the 1970's, we lost love In the 1980's, we lost values In the 1990's, we lost faith In the 2000's, we lost security In the 2010's, we lost hope in the future What can restore what we've lost? Only Jesus. Jesus gave us His name, His friendship, and a commission to accept responsibility for ourselves and for the world. When introduced to His wordsandways we'll rediscover the Jesus who: Wants His enemies won over, not wiped out Wants you to stop playing it safe Believed great things were possible no matter what things are like right now Was full of grace and truth Unleashed compassion Believed no one was too far from God to return to Him Came to seek and to save that which was lost Loves the church Pastor Ray Johnston shares the Jesus of the Bible and how we can be Christians without being jerks. He reveals how the radical message of the gospel calls us to love and serve not only our neighbors but our enemies as well. That’s the Jesus the American Church has missed and needs to meet. Jesus' mission is clear—risk everything in order to take care of people, starting in our home, neighborhoods, cities, and those in need around the world. That's the Jesus the American Church has missed and needs to meet.

The authors show how, using a creative interdisciplinary approach, it is possible to analyse drawings of teachers, television programmes, films, cartooons, comics and even Barbie dolls. Illustrated with colour reproductions and excerpts from interviews and journals, this book should appeal to teachers, academics and anyone who is interested in the popular culture of childhood, gender issues, professional identity and teacher education.
REMEMBER: BUM IS A NICKNAME, NOT A DESCRIPTION. Bum Phillips became head coach of the National Football League's Houston Oilers in 1975. He retired from the league 10 years later as one of its most colorful characters of all time. While fans of Luv Ya Blue remember Phillips for his cowboy hat and boots, for his down-home Texas yarns, most people don't know he survived deadly battles during World War II, stumbled almost accidentally into football and later gave his life, during a trip to prison, to Jesus Christ. The book chronicles his transformation from a beer-drinking cowboy, U.S. Marine and football coach to a devoted son of God. The complete story of a pro football icon. In it, you will learn: - Behind-the-scenes stories from his favorite NFL times. - How a small-town man ascended the ranks of high school, college and pro football. - Gripping accounts of his time during World War II. - His struggle to balance family life with NFL demands. - How a trip to prison catapulted this good ol' boy into a faithful Christian. "He is a Bum - only in name. One of the most generous, loyal, and caring individuals I have ever known in sport. He balanced leadership and friendship better than anyone who ever stood on an NFL sideline. We can all learn from him and his remarkable life." Jim Nantz, Emmy Award-winning CBS Sports broadcaster "People go through life never having the chance to experience special times and special people. I was lucky to have had the opportunity to share all of this with Bum Phillips and I feel blessed having done so. It is an honor to have shared my life with him." Dan Pastorini, Former quarterback of the Houston Oilers "Bum Phillips' book ... will be a blessing to you. He was a great football coach as well as a mentor to hundreds of football players. To me, his greatest accomplishment is the fact that he found the Lord Jesus as his Saviour at age 76. God helped him to succeed in his career because His gracious Hand was upon him. I love you, Debbie and Bum, and I salute you!" Dodie Osteen, Co-Founder of Houston's Lakewood Church "When you read this book, it's like being on the sideline with Bum Phillips, who coaches you up as only he can do. I love my coach and you will, too." Mike Barber, Pro Claim founder and former tight end for the Houston Oilers "This book blew me away! I am the No. 1 fan of Luv ya Blue and Bum Phillips, and I'm still floored with the Bum I never knew: Marine Hero, Coach, Southern Gentleman, Family Man! Add to the list: Born Again. And it shows. WOW DOES IT SHOW! It will leave you in awe of the real Coach Phillips. Three words sum up the impact and scope of this book: The Lord, The Love, The Legacy. It's much, much more than just one great read." Dr. John Bisagno, Paster Emeritus of First Baptist Houston
By the author of The Painted Bird and Being There: the story of a roving polo player who seeks fulfillment through transgression: “his best novel yet” (The Harvard Crimson). William Kennedy wrote in The Washington Post that “the Kosinski hero is unique in literature, as recognizable as the Hemingway hero used to be.” In Passion Play, Kosinski conjures Fabian, perhaps the most romantic, violent, and lust-driven hero of them all. A modern knight-errant of his own moral code, Fabian roams America in his custom-built VanHome, his refuge, transport, and stable for his two horses. His livelihood is polo—not the millionaire’s team sport, but the life-threatening duel of clashing horsemen. The prize is more than money and honor; it is the awareness of having drawn upon every resource of body and mind, of man and horse in danger. Passion Play is a masterpiece of violence and seduction, love and loss, by one of the world’s greatest writers.
