Excerpt from Violet Keith: An Autobiography WE stood alone, my brother Willie and I, by the bed from which the body of our dead mother had been removed only a few hours before. Long years have passed since then, but every object in that large cold room seems as distinct as if I had never quitted it; the lofty bed with its long white curtains, the large windows draped in white, the crimson carpet, the dressing table with its service of white and gold; the large mirror, above which was suspended an old fashioned woodcut of the Pilgrim's Progress, on which Willie and I used to delight to trace the wanderings of Pilgrim, with eye and finger alike busy following him in his hight from the city of destruction to his entrance into the golden gate; and more vivid than aught else, is that long dread mark on the white sheet, made by the pressure of the coffin, that indelible mark which time has never been able to efface from my mind. Excerpt from Violet Moses, Vol. 3 of 3 ON the whole, it was to be regretted that Violet did not have children. When she had been married two years, she was as all women are who realize that influences have conspired to spoil their lives, often petulant, and always secretly discontented, whereas, if she had been a mother, it would have given her a mission, and saved her from. Brooding over her mistake. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Ayside Violet The village of Weston, a place of no particular importance, was located in Pennsylvania, near the Schuylkill river. To the west of the river, perhaps a mile and a half from the village, was a cottage, nestling down under the shade of lofty forest trees, bright and beautiful, with their wealth of mid-summer foliage. A neat, whitewashed fence surrounded the cottage, and a well-worn path led from the gate to the cool, bubbling spring some distance from the house, then on through a strip of woodland to the road leading into the village. In the path near the road were two young men standing conversing earnestly. Both were handsome and prepossessing in appearance, but very different in manner and disposition. The taller of the two was dressed in black, and a spotless white neck tie every article of apparel proclaiming the clergy, but his blonde face lacked power of determination and decision, and his blue eyes held in their depths a shrinking, vacillating expression. He had been invested with ministerial dignity but a few months, and had just reached that point in his Christian career where he felt it a presumption to assert his clergyman-ship, and humiliating to be classed with the worldly portion of mankind. His companion was his opposite in temperament and complexion His dark brown hair waved above a noble brow, and his dark expressive eyes, and proud, sensitive mouth, shadowed by a curling mustache, told of stability, strong determination and tenderness.
