Matthew Camfield (1604-1673) immigrated from England to New Haven, Connecticut before 1637, married Sarah Treat about 1644, moved in 1652 to Norwalk, Connecticut and in 1666/1667 to Newark, New Jersey. Descendants in the fourth generation changed the surname to Canfield. Descendants lived in New England, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Iowa, Oklahoma, New Mexico, California and elsewhere. Includes ancestors in England to 1066 A.D.
Daniel Canfield was born 10 February 1757 in New York. His parents were Jedediah Canfield and Rose Ketchum. He married Elizabeth (Dyer?) in 1778 and they had eleven children. They moved to Randolph County, Virginia. Daniel fought in the American Revolution. He died in 1832 in Lewis County, West Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in West Virginia and Ohio.

John Hounshell Jr. died 11 August 1826 in Wythe County and is buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Crocket, Virginia.
