This book inaugurates a series of discussions on what is permanent in the original thinking of the UNL – Universal Networking Language – and the changes that have been introduced during its development. The purpose of the book is to highlight the UNL’s fundamental principles that remain as integral as they were when they were first formulated several years ago, while showing how their materialization has evolved over time, following the advances in Linguistics, Knowledge Engineering and Information Sciences. The fundamental and unchanged principles of the UNL are: The idea of an artificial language that is able to describe the universe similar to any human language; The idea of a language that, though artificial, is made up of lexical, grammatical and semantic components in the same way as any natural language; The idea of a language that can represent information and knowledge independently of natural languages; The idea that it is a language for machines, and enables human-machine interaction in an intelligent partnership. For more than a decade, eminent linguists, IT developers, NLP scholars worked together on the materialization of the “idea” of the UNL. At the start, they adopted set specifications on the formalism of the UNL that were followed by all of them. As their work progressed, they gradually realized the need for adjusting some of the initial specifications and for introducing new ones. These specifications concern three basic components of the UNL linguistic structure: the “Universal Words” (UWs) which constitute the vocabulary of the UNL; the “Relations” that describe semantic functions between two UWs; and “Attributes” that describe circumstances under which UWs and “Attributes” are used.
Lexical Semantics is about the meaning of words. Although obviously a central concern of linguistics, the semantic behaviour of words has been unduly neglected in the current literature, which has tended to emphasize sentential semantics and its relation to formal systems of logic. In this textbook D. A. Cruse establishes in a principled and disciplined way the descriptive and generalizable facts about lexical relations that any formal theory of semantics will have to encompass. Among the topics covered in depth are idiomaticity, lexical ambiguity, synonymy, hierarchical relations such as hyponymy and meronymy, and various types of oppositeness. Syntagmatic relations are also treated in some detail. The discussions are richly illustrated by examples drawn almost entirely from English. Although a familiarity with traditional grammar is assumed, readers with no technical linguistic background will find the exposition always accessible. This book explores C.G. Jung's complex relationship with Friedrich Nietzsche through the lens of the so-called 'visionary' literary tradition. The book connects Jung's experience of the posthumously published Liber Novus (The Red Book) with his own (mis)understanding of Nietzsche's Zarathustra, and formulates the hypothesis of Jung considering Zarathustra as Nietzsche's Liber Novus –– both works being regarded by Jung as 'visionary' experiences. After exploring some 'visionary' authors often compared by Jung to Nietzsche (Goethe, Hölderlin, Spitteler, F. T. Vischer), the book focuses upon Nietzsche and Jung exclusively. It analyses stylistic similarities, as well as explicit references to Nietzsche and Zarathustra in Liber Novus, drawing on Jung's annotations in his own copy of Zarathustra. The book then uses Liber Novus as a prism to contextualize and understand Jung's five-year seminar on Zarathustra: all the nuances of Jung's interpretation of Zarathustra can be fully explained, only when compared with Liber Novus and its symbology. One of the main topics of the book concerns the figure of 'Christ' and Nietzsche's and Jung's understandings of the 'death of God.'
