Excerpt from On the Nature and the Existence of God It is impossible for those who study the deeper religious problems of our time to stave off much longer the question which lies at the root of them all, "What do you believe in regard to God?." We may controvert Christian doctrines, one after another; point by point we may he driven from the various beliefs of our churches; reason may force us to see contradictions where we had imagined harmony, and may open our eyes to flaws where we had dreamed of perfection; we resign all idea of a revelation; we seek for God in Nature only; we renounce for ever the hope (which glorified our former creed into such alluring beauty) that- at some future time we should verily "see" God, that "our eyes should behold the King in his beauty" in that fairy "land which is very far off." But every step we take onwards towards a more reasonable faith and a surer light of Truth leads us nearer and nearer to the problem of problems, "What is That which men call God?" Not till theologians have thoroughly grappled with this question have they any just claim to be called religious guides; from each of those whom we honour as our leading thinkers we have a right to a distinct answer to this question, and the very object of the present paper is to provoke discussion on this point. Excerpt from The Existence of God Attested Through the Marvels of Nature The Object of this little work is to show the Existence of God attested through the Marvels Of Nature, the first work brought to light by the author, and, being written in clear language, it may all be well understood. It is not composed for contradiction, for this would be unwise; in other words, the Gospel should not be reversed or denied. Our holy fathers, through the holy Apostolic Church, have shown in an admirable way, to infidels, that there is a God without beginning and everlasting, having an almighty power and wisdom. Yea: a Creator who made Heaven, firmament and world in perfect order by pronouncing the word? A Lord who made the body Of man from dust, animated it with an invisible and im mortal spirit, as it were a spark of His divinity, one day to return to Him; that He instituted laws, through words and acts, to warn and strengthen him against sin. Those laws, well known, are convincing to man if he is good and willing, and trusts in his Divine Master. Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Excerpt from The Nature of God: A Series of Lectures The following lectures were delivered before the students of Wittenberg Theological Seminary dur ing the winter of 1908 and 1909. They are an attempt to present the Christian idea of God as opposed to that of philosophy. Between the two conceptions there is a fundamental difference. Philosophy conceives of God either from the stand point of absolute transcendence or that of helpless immanence; as utterly removed from the world, or as lost in it. To the hunger of the soul for a God with whom it may hold fellowship, and from whom it may derive help, philosophy offers a stone in stead of bread. Man needs a God who in every sense of the term is near; a Being capable of being touched with a feeling of our infirmities for the reason that He has Himself felt them. 'it is for a quasi-human God that the soul hungers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
