This is a book about a brother and a sister. It's a book about secrets and starting over, friendship and family, triumph and tragedy, and everything in between. More than anything, it's a book about love in all its forms. In a remarkably honest and confident voice, Sarah Winman has written the story of a memorable young heroine, Elly, and her loss of innocence-a magical portrait of growing up and the pull and power of family ties. From Essex and Cornwall to the streets of New York, from 1968 to the events of 9/11, When God Was a Rabbit follows the evolving bond of love and secrets between Elly and her brother Joe, and her increasing concern for an unusual best friend, Jenny Penny, who has secrets of her own. With its wit and humor, engaging characters whose eccentricities are adroitly and sometimes darkly drawn, and its themes of memory and identity, When God Was a Rabbit is a love letter to true friendship and fraternal love. Funny, utterly compelling, fully of sparkle, and poignant, too, When God Was a Rabbit heralds the start of a remarkable new literary career.
First published in 1999, this volume presents arguments which compare two inner-city wards of Salford and look to introduce such a subtlety to the understanding of the management of crime in high crime communities and derive from a longitudinal research study which took place over a two and a half year period. Between 1994 and 1996, researchers based at the University of Salford and the University of Keele embarked on research into two similarly structured neighbourhoods within the city of Salford in the North of England. This research set out to situate an understanding of the risk from and fear of crime in a comparative, urban context – to uncover how people who live, work and go to school in designated ‘high-crime’ areas manage their routine daily lives and construct their own responses to ‘risk of’ and ‘fear of’ crime. The authors go on to highlight the similarities between these wards and other wards with which they have a clear resonance across Britain.

"...the minute I picked this book up I was on an emotional rollercoaster. It was the most amazing journey to find myself crying one minute and laughing the next with the author's infectious wit and undeniable honesty. The diary entries are so raw and vulnerable, and have been written in a way that I have never experienced before. I identified with many things throughout the book and found myself recalling significant events from my own adolescent years that I believed I had blocked or forgotten about. At times it felt like there was nowhere to hide; the words I was reading were so confronting it felt as though they were written just for me! Taking this journey with the author allowed me to deal with what was coming up for me personally, and move past those feelings to a place that felt good for me. With every page that I read I couldn't believe how I was not only totally enthralled in the authors personal life story, but that I was actually also uncovering so much about who I am as a person at my very core. It allowed me to discover the parts of myself that I didn't like or accept yet, and also how to recognise this in my day-to-day life. I have now learned to accurately identify my feelings in each moment of my day, and with some conscious effort also remember to be much more kind and loving towards myself. I thank the writer of this book for allowing me a glimpse into her own life through courageously sharing and exposing her soul. What I have gained from reading it is without a doubt the best gift anyone could ever give."

Perfect for fans of The Rosie Project, Same Time, Same Place is "a heartwarming story about how history plays out in our present - and how the power to heal is right in front of us, if only we can be brave enough to look for the clues." (Vicky Zimmerman, author of Miss Cecily's Recipes for Exceptional Ladies) Daisy works nights. Nate works days. But maybe they aren't as different as they assume. Daisy is the night security guard at the Manchester Museum of Social History. She takes her job very seriously, protecting the museum from teenage troublemakers. Nate works the day shift, though he'd be more suited as a museum guide the way he chats with the visitors. Daisy doesn't approve: how does he find it so easy to talk to strangers? For five minutes each day, their shifts overlap at handover. It's the only interaction they have...until mysterious things begin to happen at the museum. Daisy notices priceless objects going missing and then reappearing, with no explanation (and with nothing on the security footage!). No one believes her except Nate, and he agrees to help her investigate. They soon discover they have a lot more in common than they realized...and their investigation uncovers not only the truth, but new possibilities for their future.
