Bringing together the analyses of the literary world-system, translation studies, and the research of European cultural nationalism, this book contests the view that texts can be attributed global importance irrespective of their origin, language, and position in the international book market. Focusing on Slovenian literature, almost unknown to world literature studies, this book addresses world literature’s canonical function in the nineteenth-century process of establishing European letters as national literatures. Aware of their dependence on imperial powers, (semi)peripheral national movements sought international recognition through, among other things, the newly invented figure of the national poet. Writers central to dependent national communities were canonized to represent their respective cultures to the norm-giving Other – the emerging world literary canon and its aesthetic ideology. Hence, national literatures asserted their linguo-cultural individuality through the process of worlding; that is, by their positioning in the international literary world informed by the supposed universality of the aesthetic.

More than any other art form, literature defined Eastern Europe as a cultural and political entity in the second half of the twentieth century. Although often persecuted by the state, East European writers formed what was frequently recognized to be a "second government," and their voices were heard and revered inside and outside the borders of their countries. This study by one of our most influential specialists on Eastern Europe considers the effects of the end of communism on such writers. According to Andrew Baruch Wachtel, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the creation of fledgling societies in Eastern Europe brought an end to the conditions that put the region's writers on a pedestal. In the euphoria that accompanied democracy and free markets, writers were liberated from the burden of grandiose political expectations. But no group is happy to lose its influence: despite recognizing that their exalted social position was related to their reputation for challenging political oppression, such writers have worked hard to retain their status, inventing a series of new strategies for this purpose. Remaining Relevant after Communism considers these strategies—from pulp fiction to public service—documenting what has happened on the East European scene since 1989.

Die Vielfalt der slavischen Literaturen in ihrer Gesamtheit wahrzunehmen, war immer eine bemerkenswerte Eigenart gerade der deutschen Slavistik, eine Eigenart, von der auch das wissenschaftliche Werk des Giessener Slavisten und Slovenisten Gerhard Giesemann gepragt ist. Dem entspricht die Ausrichtung dieses Bandes: Er vereinigt 37 uberwiegend deutschsprachige Beitrage in- und auslandischer Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen zu Gattungs- und Rezeptionsfragen, Autoren und Texten der russischen und weissrussischen, polnischen und tschechischen, kroatischen und slovenischen Literatur. Die Beitrage sind in ihrer Mehrzahl nach der traditionellen Einteilung der Literatur in die drei Gruppen Lyrik, Dramatik und Erzahltexte und innerhalb dieser Gruppen chronologisch nach der Entstehungszeit der behandelten Texte geordnet. Eine vierte Gruppe umfasst Beitrage zur Begriffsgeschichte und zur Entwicklung der Slavistik. Die in anderen Sprachen geschriebenen Artikel sind jeweils mit einem deutschen Resumee versehen.
