The subject of this thesis is the study of hybrid nanoelectronic components involving superconductors or excitonic systems. The behavior of such electronic devices is relevant both for the miniaturization of electronics as well as for possible future on-chip quantum computation. In order to characterise them the cumulant generating function of charge transfer is calculated. First, quantum point contacts between (conventional und unconventional) superconductors, ferromagnets and semiconductors are investigated. The focus of interest are transport processes involving non-trivial correlated electronic states such as Cooper pairs, excitons or Majorana fermions. In the second part quantum impurities are included and the effects of onsite Coulomb and electron-phonon interaction are discussed. Using these results the possibility to witness entanglement in superconducting beamsplitters is demonstrated. The results are compared both to different theoretical approaches and experimental data.
The book reflects scientific developments in the physics of metallic compound based nanodevices presented at the NATO-sponsored Workshop on nanophysics held in Russia in the summer of 2003. This NATO Advanced Study Institute provided an up dated understanding, from a fundamental and deep point of view, of the progress and current problems in the early universe, cosmic microwave background radiation, large scale structure, dark matter problem, and the interplay between them. The focus was placed on the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Emphasis was given to the mutual impact of fundamental physics and cosmology, both at theoretical and experimental-or observational-levels, within a deep and well defined programme, and a global unifying view, which, in addition, provides of careful inter-disciplinarity. Special Lectures were devoted to neutrinos in astrophysics and high energy astrophysics. In addition, each Course of this series, introduced and promoted topics or subjects, which, although not being of purely astrophysical or cosmological nature, were of relevant physical interest for astrophysics and cosmology. Deep understanding, clarification, synthesis, careful interdisciplinarity within a fundamental physics framework, werethe maingoals ofthe course. Lectures ranged from a motivation and pedagogical introduction for students and participants not directly working in the field to the latest developmentsand most recent results. All Lectures were plenary, had the same duration and were followed by a discussion. The Course brought together experimentalists and theoretical physicists, astrophysicists and astronomers from a variety of backgrounds, including young scientists at post-doctoral level, senior scientists and advanced graduatestudentsas well.

AMO physics studies the fundamental building blocks of functioning matter to help advance the understanding of the universe. It is a foundational discipline within the physical sciences, relating to atoms and their constituents, to molecules, and to light at the quantum level. AMO physics combines fundamental research with practical application, coupling fundamental scientific discovery to rapidly evolving technological advances, innovation and commercialization. Due to the wide-reaching intellectual, societal, and economical impact of AMO, it is important to review recent advances and future opportunities in AMO physics. Manipulating Quantum Systems: An Assessment of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics in the United States assesses opportunities in AMO science and technology over the coming decade. Key topics in this report include tools made of light; emerging phenomena from few- to many-body systems; the foundations of quantum information science and technologies; quantum dynamics in the time and frequency domains; precision and the nature of the universe, and the broader impact of AMO science.
Speech by Toyosaburo Taniguchi Dr. Kubo, Chairman, Distinguished Guests, and Friends, I am very happy, pleased and honored to be here this evening with so many distinguished guests, friends, and scholars from within this country and from different parts of the world. The Taniguchi Foundation wishes to extend a warm and sincere welcome to the many participants of the Ninth International Symposium on the Theory of Condensed Matter, which se ries was inaugurated eight years ago through the strenuous efforts of Dr. Ryogo Kubo, who is gracing us today with his presence. We are deeply indebted to Dr. Kubo, Dr. Suzuki, and their associates, who havE' spent an enormous amount of time and effort to make this particular symposium possible. We are convinced that the foundation should not be considered as what makes our symposium a success. The success is entirely due, I feel, to the continuous efforts of the Organizing Committee and of all those who have lent their support to this program. In this sense, your words of praise about the symposium, if any, should be directed to all of them. So far, I have met in person a total of 62 participants in this Division from 12 countries: Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Ireland, Israel, Rumania, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, with 133 participants from Japan. Those friends I have been privileged to make, I shall always treasure.
In the past decade, there has been a burst of new and fascinating physics associated to the unique properties of two-dimensional exciton polaritons, their recent demonstration of condensation under non-equilibrium conditions and all the related quantum phenomena, which have stimulated extensive research work. This monograph summarizes the current state of the art of research on exciton polaritons in microcavities: their interactions, fast dynamics, spin-dependent phenomena, temporal and spatial coherence, condensation under non-equilibrium conditions, related collective quantum phenomena and most advanced applications. The monograph is written by the most active authors who have strongly contributed to the advances in this area. It is of great interests to both physicists approaching this subject for the first time, as well as a wide audience of experts in other disciplines who want to be updated on this fast moving field.
