The major purpose of the study was to critically examine the extent to which three Malawian NGOs facilitate the participation of their beneficiaries and their current partnerships with other stakeholders in the provision of basic education programmes in local communities in Malawi. The ascendancy of these NGOs in education and development has been attributed to their perceived comparative advantage over the state, including facilitating participation and partnership building among beneficiaries, reaching the poor, and cost-effectiveness in the delivery of development programmes.

The Non-Governmental Development Organisations (NGDOs) have, over the past two decades, entered centre stage in their active participation in the social, political and economic issues affecting both the developing and developed world. This book offers a highly stimulating and concise summary of the NGDO sector by examining their history and metamorphosis; their influence on the social, political and economic landscapes of the ‘Northern’ and ‘Southern’ governments and societies.
