They have been produced at a point remote from literary fellowship, where I have been thrown solely on my own judgment. My surroundings and the incidents of life have suggested them all. Possibly I may hereafter touch them into fairer proportion after hearing the views of competent critics. In the development of the two! Nebraska legends I have treated my Indian characters as noble, and possessed of a true sentiment. A brutal savage is not a poetical object, and, except under rare conditions, has no business in poetry. If the Indian, like his human brethren of more favorable opportunities, has his worse side, he also has his better.
