According to a recent poll, nearly half of all adults believe today's current events indicate that we are living in what the Bible calls the 'latter days,' or 'time of the end,' but what does the Bible say about it? What signs should you look for? What should you expect as you see these days approaching? There are currently six major positions on how the end-time events will play out, and any one of them, when presented by a proponent of that position, can be very convincing. However, only one of them can be correct, which leaves the majority of Christians with a mistaken understanding of how the end-times will affect them. In this two-part book, author Robert Geiss has allotted part one to examine the six eschatological positions from a Berean approach, examining how all of them interpret the one reference point given to us in Scripture. Then, in part two, Geiss attempts, as if putting a jigsaw puzzle together, to harmonize all the major end-time prophecy in a clear picture of what Scripture says should be expected. Having originally believed one of the six positions this book aims to debunk, Geiss understands the need for Christians to examine the end-time prophecy for themselves. Join him in Nearing Midnight: Harmonizing End-time Prophecy. As Jesus warns in Mark 13:5, 'take heed that no one deceives you.'

Creatively employing song lyrics of that genre as segues, the reader is hopefully guided to and experiences reading on multiple levels. Life’s events unfold from Louisiana, to California, and ultimately culminate in Okinawa, Japan. Wild Tales from the East is a suspenseful emotional thriller that chronicles the travels and encounters of a black twenty-one-year-old recent college graduate (1968). About to be drafted, he enlists for four years in the US Navy as a medic. Hurling headlong into a turbulent transitional period in our nation’s history, the narrator’s inner journey, in many ways, reflects the upheavals of that day. He soon finds himself in Southern California and discovers there that the simplistic world of rural Louisiana has ill prepared him for the waves of change heading his way. With the war in Vietnam dividing loyalties, conflicts also abound within the narrator as he searches for self-identity, his place in the sun, and that elusive thing called love. Experiencing a metamorphosis of kind, his gradual inculcation into the counterculture movement often places him in conflict with himself and the military’s ideals. He struggles to bridge two worlds: one of the status quo and the other of a world that reflects his emerging sense of independence and freedom. Although he still harbors emotional attachment to a doomed illicit affair, he opts to marry a hometown girl and thus maintain normalcy. Shattered, all wedding plans are off when he unexpectedly receives orders to Okinawa. With all familial supports abandoned and an inner renunciation of the so-called American values, arriving in the Oriental world of the East, he presents himself essentially as a man without a country. The narrator finds the world of the East to be mysterious, seductive, and populated by warm and open people. A yearlong sojourn ensues. It is a world that he becomes intimately one with. The warm, balmy, tropical island of Okinawa is tailor made for him. Likened to a fantasy island, it is also one ideally suited for the raucous and outrageous times of that era. He finds Okinawa to be a place that caters to the desires and appetites of those who would dare pursue them. It’s a place where eroticism and mysticism meet. Into this Wild West–like cauldron, much like the biblical prodigal son, the author submerses himself. With his “old self” disintegrating, barriers that hinder total interaction in the moment, for him, no longer exist. Along with a “band” of associates often fueled by psychedelics and other contraband, he and they plow fearlessly into the nights and heights of exhilarating extremes, and thus comes Wild Tales from the East. The narrator’s nights and days are relentlessly driven by a deeper inner longing created by his ill-fated but defining love affair. His personal search for unification and fulfillment is haunted by that ever-present undertow. Often tortuously painful, his search for redemption is played out against the backdrop of an ancient culture that is also confronting the arrival of a “new age.” A walking wayfarer in a strange land, he uncovers hidden mysteries and secrets of the universe from unanticipated sources. Along his path, varied individuals present themselves and their individual struggles for survival. En route, he also stumbles across travelers of the night; and casting his lot among these sojourners and seekers of truth, he severs ties with his land of birth. Aside from his bosom buddy RL, a Southern white kid, he lives deeply inside his own head. He discovers that in many ways, the Okinawan people are also oppressed. Aided by cross-cultural relationships that he establishes, he identifies deeply with them and their circumstance. Unaware, in the process, he is gradually immersed in the Okinawan way of life. In the hazy aftermath of self-medicating, the narrator descends into a harrowing self-destructive vortex. As the accumulated “road” fatigue takes

In the bestselling tradition of The Mists of Avalon, a powerful retelling of the legend of Joan of Arc! For close to six hundred years, the world has been fascinated by the true story of Joan of Arc. The saga of her rise from obscurity to lead the armies of France, followed by her tragic martyrdom, has inspired many books, plays, and films. Less well known is the fact that Joan's astounding destiny was predicted by ancient prophecies attributed to none other than Merlin himself. Or that Joan, later canonized by the Church as a saint, may have been a practioner of an even older religion: the ancient pagan ways that predated Christianity throughout Europe. The Merlin of St. Gilles' Well is a stunning historical fantasy, based on actual events, that casts Joan and her times in a revealing new light. Urban activism can manifest in many guises, from community gardening to mass naked bike rides. But how might we theorize the evidence of the collisions between social forces that take place in our streets and public commons? Cities are formed through these collective collisions in time. This book draws on the author’s own vast experience as an activist to make links between a theory of practice with rich discussion of the histories of conflicts over public space. Each chapter examines activist responses to a range of issues that have confronted New Yorkers, from the struggle for green space and non-polluting transportation, to housing and the fight for sexual civil liberties. The cases are shaped through interplay between multiple data sources, including the author’s own voice as an observing participant, as well as interviews with other participant activists, historic accounts and theoretical discussion. Taken together, these highlight a story of urban public space movements and the ways they shape cities and are shaped by history.
Marilyn Waring probes the 'world behind the mask' in these three remarkable essays on women in politics, economics and work, and human rights. First, she pulls away the masks that women who are elected to parliamentary office are forced to wear. How do we women find ourselves trapped in the institution's games? How does that affect our ability to make progress on issues of primary importance to us? What does that do to our self-image? Can we even afford to be aware of this? The second essay continues Waring's powerful writing on economics and the concept of work. She updates the international situation described in her bestseller Counting for Nothing. Based on her project experience with the United Nations, she exposes the gap between rhetoric and consequence: you wash your pig: this is work; you wash your child: this is welfare... it has no value. The last essay unmasks the rhetoric of human rights. Waring shows how nation states exploit United Nations conventions, while also explaining the opportunities the conventions provide for political action.
