There are about a billion cars on the world's roads, 99% of which are driven by internal combustion engines (ICE). But for useful operation, internal combustion engines use only a third of the energy of the burned fuel. The rest is lost in the heat and friction of the mechanisms and in the resistance to the movement of the car. This book aims to generalize the experience of manufacturers and enterprises servicing hybrid vehicles. The introduction provides an overview of the existing hybrid car market, discusses in detail the general structure and technical characteristics of hybrid cars, the features and operation of the internal combustion engine together with an inverter and a high-voltage battery, and shows a special design of the transmission and braking system. Labor protection measures during maintenance and repair are indicated. In working on the manuscript, the author used open printed materials from manufacturers, dealers and service stations, as well as the results of their own design work and research on the operation of hybrid cars. The advantages of hybrid cars indicated by manufacturers are controversial, often not objective. This reduces their popularity and prevents them from attracting mass consumers.
The first book on electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs) written specifically for automotive students and vehicle owners Clear diagrams, photos and flow charts outline the charging infrastructure, how EV technology works, and how to repair and maintain hybrid and electric vehicles Optional IMI online eLearning materials enable students to study the subject further and test their knowledge Full coverage of IMI Level 2 Award in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Operation and Maintenance, IMI Level 3 Award in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Repair and Replacement, IMI Accreditation, C&G and other EV/Hybrid courses. The first book on electric and hybrid vehicles (endorsed by the IMI) starts with an introduction to the market, covering the different types of electric vehicle, costs and emissions, and the charging infrastructure, before moving on to explain how hybrid and electric vehicles work. A chapter on electrical technology introduces learners to subjects such as batteries, control systems and charging which are then covered in more detail within their own chapters. The book also covers the maintenance and repair procedures of these vehicles, including fault finding, servicing, repair and first-responder information. Case studies are used throughout to illustrate different technologies.
The role of the modern automotive technician has changed drastically in the past decade. The job of today's vehicle specialist involves a deep knowledge of a wide variety of technical disciplines. Few professions encompass such a diverse understanding of technology. The automotive technician is now expected to know about chemistry, electronics, mechanics, optics, as well as posses a deep analytical mind. The last only comes with time and experience. The Boatyard Book is a practical, comprehensive reference manual that provides sensible, accessible advice for boatowners on planning and carrying out annual maintenance, repairs, upgrades and refits of sailing yachts and motorboats, up to 20 metres in length. Beginning with all the information owners will need to care for their boat, including how to budget and plan tasks to be done through the year, The Boatyard Book goes on to help them choose the best boatyard for their needs, then provides essential how-to reference material and ideas for a comprehensive range of projects large and small to be carried out ashore. There's advice and tips from highly respected boatyard owners, specialists and surveyors, as well as from the author's own 25 years' experience of boat ownership, all fully illustrated with step-by-step photos and illustrations. Topics covered include: - laying up - hull and deck care - mast and rigging - sail care - engines - electrics - maintenance of plumbing and gas systems - more complex projects, including re-wiring a boat, overhauling an engine, how to treat osmosis and how to go about a complete refit. This is a book to be kept at the yard, or on the boat, and used time and time again by those who are either happy to keep things ticking along with the minimum of effort or by those who want to get stuck into bigger projects.
A complete reference that features a wealth of proven maintenance methods that can reduce energy use in any type of building. Provided are numerous forms and maintenance procedures for reducing energy use, improving system performance, and cutting total maintenance costs.
The new edition of this major handbook for mechanical and electrical engineers provides comprehensive information on the selection, use and care of electric motors. Extensively revised and updated to include new developments for power systems, specialty motors and electronically commutated motors, along with such topics as lubrication, maintenance, repair, salvage, motor modification and more.
