Our goal in writing this workbook is to improve the reader's ability to interpret dysrhythmia by providing ECG strips for practice along with answers that illustrate a standard process of analysis. Our first task was to justify adding another book to the already swollen shelves of dysrhythmia publications. Our belief is that Mastering Dysrhythmias incorporates a novel approach and fills a void in dysrhythmia instruction.
This is an electrocardiography textbook intended to teach the reader how to identify and interpret cardiac dysrhythmias. The book teaches a systematic approach that is certain to have the reader interpreting ECG/EKGs in no time. This book also has a companion website at ekguniversity.com.
Written in a clear, easy-to-understand style, Introduction to Basic Cardiac Dysrhythmias, Revised Fourth Edition, uses straightforward language to explain how the heart functions and how to interpret ECGs-essential knowledge that will allow you to anticipate the appropriate treatment for each. Coverage of the 2010 Emergency Cardiovascular Care guidelines are reflected in all topics in the text.
…The cardiac unit is a jungle, inhabited by fierce nurses, killer intensivists, marauding attendings, various flesh-eating specialists, sick patients, and lots of arrhythmias. –from the Preface Can you recognize the call of the normal sinus rhythm? Name the natural habitat of Multifocal Atrial Tachycardia or Ventricular Fibrillation? Are you well-versed in the proper care and feeding of Asystole and Atrial Flutter? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, then you need this trusty guide to help you identify and respond to arrhythmias in the veritable wilderness of the busy hospital ward. Created by a seasoned physician educator at a major urban medical center and inspired by the “field guides” used by birders, botanists and the like to identify flora or fauna in the wild, this new book offers a unique – and uniquely humorous -- approach to mastering the ever-vexing challenge of arrhythmia identification. Each arrhythmia is covered beginning with a sample ECG strip, followed by brief text describing its significant characteristics; where and when it is likely to be encountered (its “Habitat”); comments, questions and queries likely to be heard from physicians and other colleagues on the ward (the “Call”); and finally what steps the reader needs to take upon identifying the arrhythmia in a patient (“Care and Feeding”). Dr. Lader’s approach brings the sights and sounds of a modern hospital to life, enabling you to understand arrhythmia diagnosis and clinical response in context, and his offbeat, sometimes irreverent humor makes each detail memorable. Fifty self-assessment questions are included to help you master arrhythmia essentials and test your knowledge.
Designed for easy access in the clinical setting, this illustrated guide is ideal for identifying common arrhytmias, bundle branch and fascicular blocks, acute myocardial infarction, and miscellaneous ECG charges. General treatment guidelines are also discussed, along with basic background information such as the electrical conduction system, lead placement, components of the electrocardiogram, and a whole lot more.
Master the terminology you need to communicate clearly and confidently in the healthcare setting! Using small learning segments or "chunks," Mastering Healthcare Terminology, 7th Edition makes it easy to learn medical terms and definitions. Concepts and terms are immediately followed by exercises to reinforce and assess your understanding. Organizing terminology by body system, the book covers prefixes, suffixes, and word roots, and realistic case studies help you apply your knowledge to practice. Special boxes help you avoid terminology pitfalls. Written by respected educator Betsy Shiland, this book includes an Evolve website with medical animations, flash cards, quizzes, word games, and more. Frequent word part and word building exercises reinforce your understanding with immediate opportunities for practice and review. Pathology and diagnostic terminology tables summarize the phonetic pronunciation of terms, word origin, and definitions. Case studies provide an opportunity to see terminology in use. Be Careful boxes remind you of potentially confusing look-alike or sound-alike word parts and terms. Age Matters boxes highlight important concepts and terminology for both pediatric and geriatric patients. Labeling exercises and hundreds of illustrations help you learn anatomy and the accompanying combining forms. Focus On boxes put it all together by highlighting a disorder or procedure that uses the medical terminology presented throughout the chapter. Coverage of electronic medical records prepares you for using EHR in the healthcare setting. Evolve website includes medical animations, electronic flash cards, quizzes, and word games such as Tournament of Terminology, Medical Millionaire, and Match the Word Part. NEW! Point of Interest boxes offer a complete picture of selected diseases and procedures. NEW gradable activities are added to the Evolve website for this edition. NEW terms and photos keep you up to date with advances in healthcare.
The book has been redesigned and restructured to complement the order in which students learn specific skills: ECG components are presented first, followed by information on how to interpret ECGs to arrive at a diagnosis. More complex material follows basic skills, with advanced sections at the end.
An arrhythmia is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. Arrythmias occur when the electrical impulses to the heart that coordinate heartbeats do not work properly, resulting in heartbeats being too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Arrhythmias 101 is an introductory guide to heart rhythm disturbances, helping trainees understand, recognise, diagnose and manage arrhythmias. Beginning with an introduction to normal and abnormal heartbeats, the following chapters examine different types of arrhythmia, the causes of fast and slow heartbeats, their diagnosis and management. ‘Clinical pearls’ are included throughout the book. Authored by Houston-based Professor Glenn Levine, this highly useful, easy to read text includes numerous full colour images and illustrations to enhance learning and understanding. Key points Introductory guide to arrhythmias for trainees Easy to read format, presenting causes, diagnosis and management of different types of arrhythmia Useful ‘clinical pearls’ included throughout Authored by Houston-based cardiology specialist
2004 AJN BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER! An American Journal of Nursing 2004 Book of the Year! Arrhythmia Recognition: The Art of Interpretation uses hundreds of four-color graphics to communicate the complex topics related to arrhythmia recognition. The text focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the formation and maintenance of complex arrhythmias and on their clinical recognition. Each rhythm strip provides a descriptive table outlining the various abnormalities in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence. In addition, there are analytical narratives outlining what providers should consider when approaching the strip. The tables and analytical narratives are intended to formulate functional interpretative skills to consider when approaching a complex arrhythmia in a clinical situation.
