When Mike Tomkies moved to a remote cottage on the shores of Loch Shiel in the West Highlands of Scotland, he found a place which was to provide him with the most profound wilderness experience of his life. Accessible only by boat, the cottage he renamed ‘Wildernesse’ was to be his home for many years, which he shared with his beloved German Shepherd, Moobli. Centred on different landscape elements – loch, woodlands and mountains –Tomkies describes the whole cycle of nature through the seasons in a harsh and testing environment of unrivalled beauty. Vivid colours and sounds fill the pages – exotic wild orchids, the roar of rutting stags, the territorial movements of foxes, otters and badgers, an oak tree being torn apart by hurricane-force gales. Nothing escapes his penetrating eye. His extraordinary insights into the wildlife that shared his otherwise empty territory were not gained without perseverance in the face of perilous hazards, and the difficulties and challenges of life in the wilderness are a key part of this remarkable book.
The incredible true story of an ordinary Ukrainian woman’s perilous journey to freedom in the face of Russia’s invasion in 2022. In early 2022, life in the port city of Mariupol, Ukraine, was safe and predictable for Adoriana Marik. The thirty-one-year-old tattoo artist loved walking her dog by the seaside and meeting friends at cafes and public gardens. But all that changed on February 24th, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his “special military operation.” Adoriana was forced to hide in a filthy network of basements and underground tunnels. For more than a month, under deafening round-the-clock bombardment, she huddled with little food or water, and no heat, surrounded by groans from the sick and the smell of death. Then she decided to escape. Escape from Mariupol is an incredible tale of a brave young woman’s indomitable will to survive, as told to award-winning author Anne K. Howard.
POETS UNLEASHED - AN ANTHOLOGY is a compilation of just a few of the beautifully written poems of Ron Cross, Patricia Joe Schuman, Dennis Moore, Gisele Marasca, Al Michael, Thomas Lee Rhymes, Kim Shaver, Kathleen Redling and Mariano Rivera. As you read the poems in this book you will visualize the picture that each poet paints. You will feel the romantic tug on your heartstrings as you read the love poems, while other poems will invoke sadness, passion, hope and laughter. But, most of all, you will choose your favorite and the words will touch you deeply. The uniqueness of this book is that no poet stands above the others. Each poet has something to say and says it in his or her own words and style. Everyone who reads this book will find that special poem, the poets not only write for themselves but for us, the reader. These poems are given to us as a very special gift. To answer the question from Thomas "Where does the soul of a poet go?" It is here, in this book. Its presence is felt in each and every poem. Cindy Cross
The novella, "Cornfield Laughter," is an interesting parody, and tale of the lives of a number of characters, in particular, two: Shannon O'Day, a retired labour worker in the Midwest (a man direct, with little social trappings), who seems to have led an arduous life of drinking, brawling, to a point, womanizing. And Poggi Ingway, past-middle age, a foundry worker; it is 1966. Both are searching for contentment in life. Shannon thought he had it, until his wife left. Poggi seems to have left it in San Francisco, in an afternoon affair. For that matter, all the characters in the story are seeking in one way or another, that same ingredient, contentment. Yet Poggi anticipates suicide. The story ends as all the characters are drawn together, a glimpse of their lives are given to the reader...to include the promiscuous young Annabelle and her co-worker Maribel, Old Josh the diner cook, Jake and Zam-Zam (a tap dancer). Included in the book are ten short stories; four in English and Spanish: "In the Eyes of the Bull" (Seville, 1998); "Hills like Green Iguanas," (Vietnam, 1971); "A Toucan against One" (from the Amazon); "The Book Story" (a spoof, of sort); and several others.
